The element of storytelling in this image is beautifully and quietly spoken. Just enough to add intrigue and mystery without spelling everything out. The handling of tones, colours and composition all serve the narrative in a restrained and accomplished way. A considered piece of work. Good stuff.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘People’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘Animals’ and ‘Landscapes’.

The ethereal atmosphere in this image is great. It carries a real Cottingley Fairies vibe, that famous series of five photographs taken between 1917 and 1920 by cousins Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, which appeared to show fairies and fooled even Arthur Conan Doyle. A wonderful story, and your image taps into that magic. Love the tones and soft focus.

The sense of quiet contemplation here feels poignant and loaded with visceral vibes. The idea of being lost in thought, gazing out of the window on a journey, has been captured with real authenticity. A familiar moment that's been well captured.

An intriguing and at first tricky image to unravel. The mixture of fingers and toes is an inspired and original idea, and painting the nails harmonises things beautifully with a playful groove. I love the sculptural element of your composition too.

Not exactly sure how you've created this wonderful image, but I love the spirit of experimentation on display. It feels like you have layered several images together. Either way, the dreamlike, surreal vibe is lovely. This approach is how interesting work gets made. Well done. Kudos.

Love the colour palette here, it really shines, with the yellows and reds grooving all over the frame. Naturally, the subject is the focus of the composition, but she is ideally placed within it, and just like her baskets of goods, the frame itself is beautifully balanced.

Love the quietness of this intimate portrait. Photographing children doing things, rather than posing them, often makes for far more compelling portraits, and this is a lovely case in point. Clever use of f/2 to create a shallow depth of field and separate the subject from the background. The slightly muted colour palette works beautifully with the contemplative vibe too.

I love the way you've accentuated the sense of isolation by placing the subject in the centre of the frame. Even though it feels like a quiet, contemplative moment of reflection, the timing with the protagonist in the exact middle of the road is perfect. Kudos.

A cracking silhouette. Shooting into the sun, or contre-jour, has many challenges, but you've pulled it off very well, even retaining some small detail in the foreground. I particularly like the way you've handled the sun itself, and having the subject perform adds another layer of interest.

The simplicity of this composition has a poetic grace that I find deeply compelling. I spend a lot of time travelling by sea and wandering around ports and harbours, and this speaks eloquently to that experience. A really lovely image.

Layering multiple images into a single frame is a great technique. It nods nicely to the joiners David Hockney was making in the 1980s, where he assembled Polaroids and prints into fragmented composites of a single scene. What I particularly like is the way this approach reveals the same view from slightly shifted perspectives.

The cool, fashion-esque vibe of this shoot oozes attitude. The underground location, the nonchalant stance of the protagonist and the low angle of view combine to make this an awesome shot. The slightly muted colour palette works a treat too. I also love that the subject is looking away from the camera, which adds a sense of mystery and lets the viewer fill in the gaps.

Clever and cunning use of framing in this lovely image. The frame within a frame works a treat and gives the image a voyeuristic vibe (without being creepy). The blurred foreground to the left of the frame is perfect. The mono tones and use of 'grain' work well and complement the story.

This excellent image really captures the event in the spirit of the decisive moment. Perfectly timed with the energy exploding out of the frame. The black-and-white treatment has been handled with skill and suits the subject perfectly. Good work. Kudos.

The cacophony of colour exploding across this punchy portrait is awesome. Using mixed colour lighting has its challenges, but here you've handled it with skill and creativity to great effect. The title suggests it was made not in a studio but on location in a Be at One Bar - Nicely observed if so.
