Firstly, congratulations on placing 1st of over 500 submissions. This image is so cinematic, so quietly dramatic, that it almost looks as if it's been taken from a movie. The composition is fantastic in that there is something intriguing in every corner of the shot, however your eyes are drawn to the subject in the back. The muted colours and use of shadow fit the brief perfectly, and I find myself wondering what's going on; where are we and who is the subject? Well done on such a powerful image!

I really love the sense of abandonment in this photo. Though I'm sure the shops are just closed for the night, the shot gives the impression that this place has been forgotten; broken phone boxes, only one of which has a working light, litter on the floor, and no sign of life other than the subject. The single light source in the phone box has been used really effectively to draw the viewer's attention to the woman, to question why she's there.

I love this image for its contrasting nature. The "Super Crane" is bright, fun, looks almost new, and juxtaposes perfectly with its surroundings, both aesthetically and emotionally. Your use of the game as the single light source is great, and contorts the image somewhat, changing the nature of something we usually associate with happiness to something more sinister. Congratulations on an amazing shot.

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** The "golden hour" is well-known to photographers, but what about the hours after that? Shooting in ambient or unnatural light has its challenges, but is a lot more predictable than during the day when weather and moving clouds constantly affect the amount and quality of light hitting your lens. It's not just light that's different, however - at night, the streets come alive with all kinds of activities that you just don't see during the day. So make the most of it, and get out there!
