On the Move - People Travelling

July 2023

Rather lovely. Romantic even. Well observed and sensitively done. To improve? Well, more careful metering of the exposure. The sunlight is very strong on the (inevitably) white shirt and the highlights have blown. That said, I think that it's a strong and rather, gentle sensitive, gentle frame. Nicely done.

I like this but it could be stronger. I know what I'm supposed to be looking at - the three elements (Two woman on their 'phones and the passengers walking on the platform) - separated by internal frames. It almost works but it feels rushed and perhaps more careful framing might have delineated the woman on the left more clearly. More, the very high contrast makes this frame a little uncomfortable to view. Good effort but check out Bruce Davidson's 'Subway' work for further inspiration.

I really like this. It's a very controlled image in that the photographer has composed and waited for something to happen. It's pretty close but for me I'd have liked a cleaner and clearer delineation between the elements. That said, the graphic idea is strong and compelling. Well done.

I really do like this but it feels like the photographer made the image before its was fully 'developed'. Great photographs are about timing and here, although the framing is strong - aided by the dramatic lighting - I can't help but feels a few seconds later might have yielded a better result so that we might visually delineate the horse and cart more clearly. Still, great effort.

What I really like about this is not its potential perfection but the thought that went into it. Photographers have to be visually curious and always seeing images. I think that the odd angle and the pattern of the passengers is really interesting. Well done.

A very nice moment captured. I like the child's huge stride and the clear sense of purpose. I like the toy detail and also that her hat slightly obscures her - but it's the central pigeon with its wings fully extended that makes such a pleasing shape that makes this image for me. Nice.

I think that this is lovely and encapsulates both the romantic and hopeful aspect of travel. Technically it works because of a strong panning technique that both blurs the background and emphasis a (very) shallow depth of field on the woman's face. However the image additionally evokes a mood with a subtle colour palette around a golden sunset and that's why this was a winner.

I really like this a good deal. It's a very simple frame that tells us a good deal of what's going on. I like that everything is clearly delineated and I like the man's expression and the curve of the tracks. My only issue is that in terms of exposure, the sky is a little harsh and bright - maybe a tiny bit more care in that would have made a difference. But an excellent frame nonetheless.

Although generally I'm not a fan of working with such a very long lens on the street, in this instance it's successful. The long focal length compresses the entire scene and has allowed the photographer to show the action (the woman's animated conversation) as if a tableau. It's nicely done and the colour scheme of the foreground is pretty harmonious with the yellow of the walls. Nice.

I like this frame but what am I looking at? There seems to be two images here - one of the boy and another of the station platform. They jar together because they aren't harmonious. There's a simple picture on the right but unless you're going to make the two elements work together and make a compositionally interesting image with the left hand side, this sadly fails. Which is a shame because with a little more patience and careful framing this could have been great. Well seen though.

I really like this: I like the shape of the stetson that is mirrored in the lasso and I like the framing of the chaps either side of the horse - but why has the horse no legs? I'm not suggesting that every single image must have everything in it but here it feels like a 'lack'. Shame because this is potentially very good.

Terrific. For me it has to be the exquisite expression on the nearest dog's face. I really like the low, dramatic angle and the sense of speed that this conveys. Good exposure on quite a tricky scene. I suppose if I was being mean I could say that I'd have preferred the camera angle to be even lower so as to add more drama - but this is very good as it stands.

For this contest you are invited to submit images of people travelling. Backpackers on overland trips, an old man taking the bus down to the shops, or a student dashing through a city on a bicycle. Images should show people on the move, on any kind of transport, at any time of day, and anywhere in the world.

A nicely brave composition, graphic and strong. Sometimes it's the angles that we force ourselves to notice that are visually important. If I was to be critical, I'd like the left and right turn signs to be fully visible and I'd lose the lower pedestrian completely but sometimes we have to work with what we see and this is a good effort.

There's a lovely stillness to this Keralan image. I like how the boat diagonally bisects the frame hardly disturbing the water behind it. I like the fencing at the horizon that (almost) cuts the frame in half and I especially like the saturated red shirt of the first man that gives areal focus. Most of all however, I like the languid palm frond that droops into the top right as a very effective framing device.
