Out of Place

October 2024

Naturally, the juxtaposition of the two signs, one advocating for the Catholic church and the other an advertisement for adult-themed movies, makes this an interesting image which perfectly speaks to the 'out of place' theme of this round. Photographically the simple, formal approach to the urban landscape with echoes of the New Topographics works a treat.

This stunning image has so many layers of surreal vibes that it's difficult to know where to begin. A mermaid lying on a cafe/diner table on their smartphone is just insane, yet it somehow feels so ordinary. The execution is technically excellent, but it's the recognition of the moment that makes it a winner.

You captured a beautiful and poetic moment, which I am sure was fleeting and over quickly. The position of the bird is perfect and artfully harmonises with the composition and the colour palette. It was taken with the humble iPhone, too, which just goes to prove the old adage about the best camera being the one with you.

This seems like an unusual sign to see in such a barren and desolate location. Perhaps it is this dislocation that speaks so well to the 'out-of-place' theme. Additionally, the deep red of the sign works perfectly against the dark palette of the land and the blue hues of the sky.

This is the first I've heard or seen of The Gottfried Bechtold Door project, which I've since learned is a conceptual art installation. What an amazing idea! This is a wonderful photograph that captures the spirit of the Austrian project. Good work.

I love this image, in particular, as it highlights and comments on the way in which we use phones to record and consume experiences. A sea of smartphones has become a ubiquitous sight in front of many of the world's most iconic paintings and this image captures that perfectly.

This stunning scene has a beautiful, minimalist vibe. The high-key tones have been skillfully captured to retain enough detail and light enough to evoke a sense of intense brightness. Naturally, the loan figure with bright clothing and accompanying footprints adds a compelling narrative twist

This considered and poignant picture makes excellent use of reflections. The sublime composition, control of tonality, and the black-and-white treatment all exploit the reflections creatively. The flooded river and discarded supermarket trolleys speak to aspects of our times, adding a compelling story. Good work!

This is a clever and imaginative idea—a good concept that has been well thought through and skillfully executed. The simple studio lighting works well along with the seamless white background creating a slick and polished finished piece. Good work, keep it up!

This is an excellent concept that is both fun and playful. It has been skillfully realised, too. The high-contrast monochromatic tonality has been handled well and suits the subject perfectly. This is good work; well done, and keep it up!

Flea markets and junk shops are great places for encountering chance arrangements of seemingly random objects into 'found' still lives. This intriguing conflation of objects demonstrates this perfectly and channels a surrealist vibe. The echo of the hat and halo is inspired.

I'm drawn to this image's beautiful simplicity. While it is a relatively ordinary and easy-to-overlook scene, the subtle interplay between the tones, textures, and colours is wonderful. Of course, the fishtail in the middle of the scene feels 'out of place' in a delightful way.

Wow, what a fantastic encounter. The compsotion is excellent, but it's the colour harmonies bouncing between the greens and reds that makes the image sing. Of course the narrative twist with the speed sign, scuba diver in the murky depths is excellent too.

It is a simple and graphic approach to the theme, but it works a treat. Naturally, the blue container stands out against the warm hues of yellow, red, and orange of the other containers and consequently feels 'out of place'. The deliberate and formal approach to the composition, with carefully paid attention to the vertical and horizontal lines, makes the image stand out!

Another fine example that uses juxtaposition to eloquently play to the Out of Place theme. Here are two sunbathers lying on a beach alongside a digger and its operator wearing high-vis clothing. Kind of bonkers. It feels like there are echoes of Magnum photographer Martin Parr's work in this excellent image. Good work.
