What a fantastic photo montage. Creating truly successful montages can be tricky as it requires far more skill than just assembling a patchwork of photos. Here we see a very strong connection between each individual shot; being a study of the same subject, but each is sufficiently different from the others to be interesting. Also importantly the individual shots have been precisely combined within the overall frame, and the relatively narrow black dividing lines enhance rather than detract. Congratulations on your winning image.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of peeling and distressed paintwork. The subject with a deteriorated painted surface can be anything you choose, whether large or small, but the peeling and distressed paint should be clearly visible in the shot. You may wish to show your subject within a wider scene, or move in close to show the paintwork in a more abstract way. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to your entries.

These peels of paint are just asking to be pulled and helped on their way!! Lighting is good which allows shadows underneath the peels of paint to give depth to the shot and really emphasises the textures. Great colour contrasts between the cool blues and warm rusty red. Great shot, well done on your top ten placing.

This is just the type of photo I was hoping to see, where the flakes of paint make abstract patterns, in which the viewer can imagine all sorts of objects or beings. I love the contrasting colours, and also the textures you have managed to capture. A well-seen image, well done on your top ten placing.

Meet the judge

I love the abstract patterns and colours created by the worn and peeling paint, especially as we have here where the layers are different and contrasting colours, being revealed by more or less in different places. What especially attracted me to this image however is the cleat being used as an initial focal point, which also adds context. Being captured in bright sunlight makes the colours pop, and also creates an interesting shadow. Congratulations on your second place finish.

This was an image I kept coming back to for my top ten and finally decided it should be placed. What really attracts me to this shot is the unusual perspective, with the foreground door filling half the frame and the longer view down the street filling the other half, almost like two separate images stuck together. It caused me to do a double-take, which I like. For the theme, the tatty paintwork on the door is great, with the crusty letterbox and door handle adding interest too. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

I love this abstract view of an old door and surround. I am unsure whether the colours have been manipulated in editing, especially the darker tones, but whether they have or haven't, it doesn't matter as the image still has lots of visual appeal. With all the tightly packed verticals, it reminds me of a barcode! It would be interesting to see the wider scene in which this door is located, but really this shot is all about the removal of that context, the patterns formed by the verticals and the textures of the peeling paint. Well done on your top ten placing.

A rather shabby frontage that many would pass by without a second glance, however it makes for a great photographic subject with a wealth of textures. I love the rather muted colour palette, with all the varoius colours and tones blending well together. Great composition, with the door and bicycle balancing each other in the frame. I don't know if the bike was as found or maybe your own photographic prop! but it certainly adds to the success of the image. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

What a great shot of a building that looks to be in a state of terminal decline. An interesting-looking structure at the best of times, looking a bit tough-and-ready in its construction, but as it appears to have become disused it is showing all the signs of gradual weathering and wear from the elements, which makes for a great photographic subject. The bright yellow is an obvious draw for the eye, but then there is so much to see in all the worn and peeling surfaces. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

This image was always going to be in my top ten as soon as I saw it, it stood out from the rest as being a bit different, and the beauty is in the simplicity and the ordinariness of capturing such an everyday subject. Everytime I walk across my local supermarket carpark I am fascinated by the multitude of different patterns in the various coloured painted lines (and yes, I have photographed them!) and always feel a bit disappointed when the cracked and detetiorating lines get freshly painted as they become far less interesting. Great composition and well handled in post-processing to get some great tones and contrast. Well done on your top ten placing.
