Thanks to all who entered the competition and for the variety and quality of your images. As usual I had trouble selecting a top ten and have commended quite a large number of most admirable entries.

This is my winning entry and what a captivating image it is. The character is well separated from the background, is colourful and has a wonderful expression. It’s an image with real visual impact and I like it very much indeed.

Congratulations ......

There were many group shots of re-enactment events submitted to the competition but this is the one of that genre that really stands out for me.

The colours are vivid, the smoke separates the figures from the background quite beautifully, the arrangement of the people is most photogenic and the flag just seems to tie the whole arrangement together. It’s a superb image and well done.

Hello hello hello but I seem to be selecting a lot of character portraits in my top ten. Guilty as charged officer :)

Another fine image, well lit and once again the plain background and vignette concentrate attention on the subject.

Well done on your top ten placing.

Just a quiet moment of a soldier sipping his cuppa but this is such an enjoyable image. Lots of detail to hold the eye and the sepia tint and square format contribute nicely to a real vintage feel. A lovely image and once again well deserving of a top ten placing.

Shiver me timbers but this is another engaging character study and a most handsome pirate. His pose and expression are good and the vignette and the washed out colour palette work a treat. Well done on your top ten placing.

Beautifully staged and lit and a most accomplished image. I’m not sure if this Queen hails from a real period in time or an imaginary one but I care not. What a fabulous image this is, well done.

A good looking character study.

The plain background and vignette draw the eye to the soldier and the detail on his jacket and the choice of monochrome presentation works so well.

My only minor gripe is that his chin seems slightly under-detailed as compared with the rest of the image. Perhaps a little judicious burning-in would bring out more detail in the stubble?

This is an image with a high degree of visual impact. The post-processing work really catches the eye here and suits the characters and the scene admirably. These are indeed the most ragged of Victorians and not fellows to meet down a dark alley on a foggy evening. I dread to think what they’re talking about :)

Meet the judge

A fine character study and I love the low viewpoint and the guy’s posture and somewhat arrogant expression. Clearly not a sweep to be messed with or put down in any way.

The lighting is good and the plain black background picks out the detail of the guys hair and the bristles on the brush. It’s a fine image and well worthy of a top ten placing.

Period dress may be defined as the clothing or attire typical of a particular period or time in history. In this contest I want to see your very best photographs of people dressed in period clothing. You may show one person or many but none of the people in the photograph should be in modern day dress as these will be discounted from my judging process. Colour, monochrome and composite entries are all welcome and I look forward to seeing your work.
