**NEW RULE: The same image, and altered versions of the same image file, can only be entered into one APOY round. Find out more.** For this round we are looking for images containing people, whether that be in the form of a portrait, candid street scene, or carefully considered selfie. Bear in mind that there are expectations attached to portraits that can be somewhat intimidating. Drawing out the hidden qualities or character of an individual is not always easy. There are a number of things to consider, such as ensuring the correct focus and making sure that your images are not full of superfluous background detail that ends up fighting with your subject for attention. Great people pictures can be found in all walks of life, from family and friends to local shopkeepers as well as strangers.
This portrait has very engaging eye-contact, telling you a lot about the character of the subject. To make it even more impactful, it'd be worth making the composition a little more considered by positioning the eyes a touch further down the frame, and removing the distracting elements from the background.
This engaging study has so much to look at and take in. It has been expertly composed, drawing your attention to the subjects while highlighting their characters to perfection. The dramatic sky plus the exaggeration caused by the wide-angle lens also add to the overall effect, too. Each of the boys' individual personalities shine through thanks to the choice of pose and expression, which has been superbly captured at just the right moment.
This is one of those spur-of-the-moment type shots that happens by serendipity, with everything coming together just perfectly for a great shot. It probably wouldn't have worked if the subject was wearing any other colour, but as it is, the perfectly central framing and bold clothing make it extremely eye-catching. We'd perhaps have straightened it ever so slightly for a perfect bottom edge.
