The trick with this type of through-a-wet-windscreen image is to find a pleasing balance between the scene and the distortion created by raindrops on the glass. It’s easy to allow either one to overpower the other, but here it’s been beautifully judged by Roberto; zoom in and there’s plenty of sharp detail to be found in the trees and bushes – individual rain drops can be picked out, too – but the smattering of smears on the window add an additional layer of texture. The muted colour scheme and restrained exposure enhance the piece, and the overall effect is one that captures what it feels like to be caught in a rainstorm.

A bold, minimalist approach to the ‘perfect storm’ theme. Using just three key elements – a sliver of clear sky and a few birds sandwiched between dense blocks of shadow – the photographer has constructed a graphical composition that oozes mood. They’ve gone the extra creative mile, identifying the photographic potential in the opportunity as opposed to making a record shot of the scene that they were presented with. The result is arresting and would work well as a large-scale framed print.
