I'm catching myself smiling while I write a review for this image. It's the way this shot exudes friendship in every single detail that makes me smile, as well as its power to bring me back to the way friendship felt at that age, in its complicity and loyalty. This is undoubtedly a beautiful portrait image that is able to evoke a plethora of emotions in the viewer. The choice of black and white eliminates the possible distraction of colours to focus on what truly matters: the pose and the facial expressions that clearly show how relaxed the boys around each other and the bond that they share. A brilliant shot, well done!
A handsome subject with a piercing stare in this successful portrait shot. I love how the boy's face is well lit whilst retaining enough contrast and depth, and how it sits perfectly framed by the distressed train windows. The colour grading is very appealing and truly brings out the best of this already beautiful portrait shot. The cherry on the cake is the contrast of the cyan window frame with the magenta dress of the lady further in. A pleasure for the eye. A great shot, well done!
This image is undoubtedly a perfectly executed portrait. From the subject's expressive eyes locked with the camera, to the well thought-out composition and the vibrant, eye-catching colour palette: this shot is a series of winning choices all wrapped into one. I love the slight tilt of the subject's head, as well as the mysterious stains around her mouth. The detail is exquisite; the light perfectly soft, but not flat. And even the wire net in the foreground, well blurred via a f5.6 aperture, doesn't seem to be a distraction, providing context instead - a hint as to who the girl might be and what she might have been doing just before being photographed. A fantastic shot, well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Childhood can seem to pass in the blink of an eye, in particular for busy parents, and quality portraits of children are a magical way to memorialise these always-changing moments in the child’s journey. Children at different ages present different challenges for the portrait photographer, and patience is a virtue, but when it works it’s a joyful genre of photography. If the subjects are your own children, strive even harder for excellence in your photography, as your natural feelings may influence you to think more highly of your images than they strictly warrant! The emphasis here is on portraits rather than snapshots of children at play or some other pastime.
