This is a striking, memorable image full of colour and life that shows how prayer can happen anywhere, mixing naturally into everyday moments.

The composition is strong. A loose circle of women surrounds the central subject, who, with her bright red clothing and light falling directly and shadow-free across her face, beautifully stands out from the small crowd. Her stillness contrasts with the movement around her in a way that is sacred and poetic.

I like that the frame includes the women around her rather than isolating her. This adds important context and meaning. If anything, I’d be curious to see a little more of the women higher up on the steps.

The shutter speed freezes the movement nicely, and the aperture keeps everything clear and detailed, creating a sense of 'busyness' which works extremely well in this image.

This is a visually striking and unique take on a prayer image, and it fully deserves its first place in the competition.

This image has a soft, painterly quality that sets it apart from the rest.

I love the contrast between the bright white of the nuns' aprons and the deep greys of the surrounding stone. The architecture of the church, with the detailed arches, the columns, and the large window, definitely adds to the charm.

The light is particularly lovely. In my opinion, it's the element that most sets this image apart from the rest. It catches the nuns' aprons in gentle highlights, eventually ending up onto the stone floor, enhancing its texture.

The narrow aperture of F8 allows the details and textures of the stone, both in foreground and in background, to remain sharp and add interest to the frame.

This image exudes an incredible sense of calm. It feels timeless, like a painting you could sit and stare at for a while.

This unique image caught my eye the moment I saw it.

The first thing to stand out is the colours. The cool cyans and greens play beautifully against the warm reds and yellows, giving the image a rich, balanced feel.

There's a strong sense of movement that brings the scene to life, while the light from the small window gently illuminates the subjects. The surrounding extensive shadows add pleasant depth, creating a calm and intimate atmosphere.

There's plenty of detail to take in, from the details and textures of the prayer wheel, to the window and the painted walls, yet it never feels cluttered. The frame is tidy, the subjects clear, the atmosphere peaceful.

This image captures a rare moment with technique and taste, and it absolutely deserves its place in the competition.

Common to all religions is time spent either in quiet personal communion with, and appeal to, one’s God, or in meditation, seeking to still the workings of the mind and experience one’s consciousness more simply. Photographing people in these private acts of devotion and contemplation is not always easy, but creates powerful imagery that reminds us of the importance of religion to so many in the world.
