Prayer and meditation

April 2026

Unlike many other 'prayer' images, this shot conveys a sense of energy and liveliness, rather than pure calm and reflection.

From a compositional point of view, I love how the monks and the umbrellas form two strong diagonal sections in this image. It brings order to the frame even though there's so much happening within it.

The light is gentle and diffused over the people, while hitting the umbrellas more directly, making their colours feel vibrant, contrasting the more muted tones of the rest of the scene.

The aperture of F8 keeps everything in focus, gifting this shot with much detail for the viewer's eye to feast on.

This image is not only a powerful interpretation of the theme 'prayer', but also a skillfully executed capture, and it truly deserves recognition.

There is quiet beauty in the simplicity of this image. We can't see the subject's face, and yet we can clearly sense her devotion and her pain.

Compositionally, I like how the three main elements (the woman, the orchids, and the golden lamp), follow a diagonal line across the frame. It creates a sense of order, naturally drawing the viewer's eye towards the woman.

The colours are earthy, and the textures feel raw, which intensifies the emotion of the scene. Every element has its place in the frame and works together to create an image that feels both intimate and powerful.

This image ended up in my top ten as soon as I saw it.

The light is gentle and effective, beautifully catching the man's face and emphasising the texture of the stone and the detail in the columns.

The smoke, an important element in the frame, is made more visible thanks to the dark entryway behind, giving it shape and presence. The shutter speed of 1/20 lets the smoke flow gently through the image, giving it a soft, natural sense of movement whilst everything else remains (surprisingly) sharp.

When it comes to colours, I love how the blue of the trousers matches that of the smoke, contrasting nicely against the neutrals of the surrounding stone.

Overall, this is a truly visually striking image, one that has the power to immediately make you stop and take a closer look.

Common to all religions is time spent either in quiet personal communion with, and appeal to, one’s God, or in meditation, seeking to still the workings of the mind and experience one’s consciousness more simply. Photographing people in these private acts of devotion and contemplation is not always easy, but creates powerful imagery that reminds us of the importance of religion to so many in the world.
