Great photography is all about the use of light to create drama and impact. This contest was awash with impressive beasts such as the large African mammals, but few of these used light in such a skilful way as, in contrast, is demonstrated here. I love the use of backlighting to highlight the shape and form of the spider, the under exposure extenuating its delicate structure, while providing a degree of predatory menace. A great image, although it does appear to be missing a leg!
This is quite a hard image to look at and shows nature in its rawest form. The photograph transports you to this beach on the Falkland Islands so you can share the photographer’s experience as the King Penguin tries desperately to make its escape. The photographer has made the right choice with the exposure settings to concentrate on capturing the animals perfectly, the background rendered with a mild high key effect which works well. There is sufficient depth of field and a fast enough shutter speed to ensure that all the details are captured sharply. I also like the central composition here and the low angle of view.
I love the combination of wildlife and the subtle blend of urban environment in this photograph. The image has so many things to commend it from the positioning of the fox in the frame, the facial expression and gaping yawn, the skilful exposure to hint at the time of day while retaining a good level of detail. But the thing that really elevates this image from the good to the brilliant is the bokeh balls in the background, formed by the out of focus city lights, which add sparkle and panache. Great shot!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Tennyson’s ‘Nature, red in tooth and claw’ is epitomised by our planet's predators - animals who live primarily by killing and consuming other animals. We often think of apex predators such as eagles and sharks, but many animals sustain themselves through hunting others, and so the remit is quite broad for this contest. Images don’t have to show the animals in the act of predation.
