Predators

August 2025

This image had me in a chokehold for a second- there is so much to enjoy here! I absolutely love the tension in the scene between the cormorant and the heron- as well as the poor fish's priceless expression caught between the two. Firstly, it is an incredibly well composed, sharp, and clean image. Secondly, the action is dynamic and exciting for the viewer and begs the question of who won this particular clash between predator and would-be kleptoparasite. Fantastic work!

This photo is quite simply phenomenal! The sharpness, the dynamic action captured at the precise perfect second is astounding. I especially love the detail of the Roller's eye, partially veiled by its nictitating membrane. I think this image speaks for itself, a beautiful clean background, beautiful subject matter, compelling narrative, and sharp and well-composed. And the perfect framing of the wispy insect in the last millisecond of its life- an excellent contribution to this contest highlighting predation. Great work!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Tennyson’s ‘Nature, red in tooth and claw’ is epitomised by our planet's predators - animals who live primarily by killing and consuming other animals. We often think of apex predators such as eagles and sharks, but many animals sustain themselves through hunting others, and so the remit is quite broad for this contest. Images don’t have to show the animals in the act of predation.

What I enjoy most about this image is it flips the script on the viewer and shows you the subject from the perspective of the prey! I feel like I am tiny, caught by a great beast of a spider in its home. The intricate details of this labyrinth spider's architecture are truly impressive up close, as well as the subject quietly awaiting around the corner ready to strike. This is a great photograph and as I mentioned I really especially love the perspective- a great addition in a competition of "Predators" to give you the experience of the prey!
