Public Art and Sculpture

January 2023

Using parts of a sculpture as a framing device was a clever and cunning compositional idea. It's been beautifully realised, making what would have been a good, but maybe rather an ordinary cityscape into an image with depth and interest.

What an inspired and creative solution to the brief. The idea of using multiple exposures was excellent and I love the way both images have layered together. To have achieved this on film is even more accomplished and satisfying. Kudos to you!

Simple but highly effective image. The shallow depth of field, using a small aperture such as f/2.8 has created a beautifully blurred background which helps create separation from the subject. The skilful handling of the black-and-white conversion is spot on!

I love the simplicity of this image. The formal and minimal composition feels perfectly aligned with the art installation Prada Marfa. The black and white, gritty, grain, scratched and dusty scan of a 5x4 neg (I presume) works well and the overall deadpan aesthetic is a nice nod to the work of The New Topographics.

I love the humble vibe of this found artwork. The subject matter might not be as glamorous as some of the grand sculptures seen by others in this challenge but this is a delight. The handling of grey tones is perfect and the inclusion of the lamp post and masts of a boat add a dynamic contrast.

There are a lot of fine images of Mary's Shell in this challenge, however, this one, which uses slow exposure techniques to blur the water is a fabulous idea that's been well executed. The restrained, minimal composition, square crop and black and white conversion have been skillfully realised.

What a fun, creative and skillfully captured shot. I'm sure it wasn't easy to get a dog to mimic the position of the art. The colour palette and slightly muted tones add to the gritty street vibe. It is always good to see a bit of humour too. Well done.

The colour palette is sublime in this interesting study. Focusing on a part of the sculpture was an inspired way for the photographer to add their own creative twist and interpretation. I love the way the curves ebb and flow through the compsotion

Beautifully seen study of lines, shape, tone and texture in this skillfully captured shot. However, it is the perfect timing of the skater in the middle of the frame that makes the image shine. The figure adds a wonderful sense of scale and a lovely sense of human presence.

I love the idea that this upended boat has been reimagined as a bench and in turn, recognised by the photographer as a sculpture and acknowledged as an artistic experience. Perhaps in the spirit of Duchamp's Readymades - anything can be art. Nicely seen, keep it up!

A bold, simple, but highly effective image. Technically the mono tones have been skilfully handled. However, it's the politicised story behind the image that makes it shine. The gull and its associated feculence dripping on Bevan's sculpture speaks to the moment. Good work!

Wow, this shot is all about timing - which is perfect. From the caption, it seems that the photographer saw the image in their mind's eye and played a cunning waiting game until the right person walked into the shot. Clever stuff. The bold graphic use of lines, shape and mono tones also work very well. Good work.

An inspired use of reflection that works wonderfully well. The sublime shapes of the sculpture are stunning and the contrast between the old and the new is a lovely touch. The handling of the tones and colour helps create a rich, vibrant and moody image.

What a great find. The positioning of the words in the composition have been carefully considered even the subtle tyre tracks in the foreground create effective leading lines inviting the viewer into the scene. The colour palette works well and echoes the vibe of the words with style. Good work.

On any photowalk around a town or city, the photographer is naturally drawn to public art and sculpture. In the public artwork there is something of peculiar interest amongst the buildings, the people, the parks and vehicles. As well as wanting to represent the artwork in an interesting way, it can be useful to explore how the public interacts with it, and the context within which it has been placed.
