Puddles

November 2021

We saw lots of reflections of building in this contest but this image stands out for a number of reasons. We like the warm colours and the fact that the Duomo appears to blend into or emerge from the street.

That's impressively heavy rain, you can see a haze of splashes into the distance and the puddle looks almost like it's boiling! You've done very well to capture the close splashes made by the raindrops so effectively, even with a couple of 'crowns' of water.

This image caught our attention because of the clever combination of shadows and reflections with the shadows fanning out from the bottom centre of the image. The black and white conversion works well, helping to emphasize the shadows and blend them with the reflections.

Shooting from a low angle has added impact to your image and made more of the clear reflection in the puddle. The person in the shot gives the viewer's eye somewhere to rest within the image and adds a sense of scale.

This image captures the fun of jumping in a puddle superbly. It's an important part of childhood that deserves to be photographed. The blue coat and jeans contrast nicely with the orange of the puddle to make the image pop a little more.

These images make a very attractive triptych and your arrangement works very well with the side images almost reflecting each other and featuring bold yellow lines. The central figure is also the largest and darkest so it stands out well in the middle.

This image caught our attention because of the strong silhouette of the figure against the sky. It looks like the person has one foot on the wall but the reflection shows they are actually in mid-air. You've timed the shot very well and it suits the monochrome conversion.

This image captures the experience of trudging along with shopping after a rainstorm very well. We like the fact that you've inverted the shot so the reflection is where your eye goes first, it makes a more interesting image than looking at it the other way around.

I (Jeff) love the patterns and the heavy tones in this image. We saw lots of frozen puddles in this round, but this is one of the very best. It reminds me of a painting with broad brush strokes, and I love the texture and detail.

Anyone who has been in London on a stormy evening can identify with this image. Your composition is excellent, making the reflection seem like they are actual objects. Your timing was also great, with the person at the ideal point with their hand up to their head, perhaps shielding their face from the weather. The little dots of colour from the leaves are a lovely touch that link well with the lamp.

This is a well-spotted image. We love the warm tones of the reflection in the puddle, the glistening cobbles of the street and the dark silhouettes of the pigeons and their shadows. No doubt you had to act quickly to capture this image before the birds flew away.

While this may seem quite a simple image of a scene that many would walk by, it's beautifully executed. We love the graphic lines, bold colour and strong contrast. Your composition gives equal weighting to the building and its reflection to create an image about pattern and colour rather than the structure itself.

You've captured the tram at the perfect point before the puddle so that all of it is reflected and we see the merging set of tracks. The colours work very well with the yellow standing out boldly from the surroundings.

This image has lots of impact, we love the bold, dramatic dark lines that inject perspective and pull your eye into the frame and towards the two figures in the distance. You've picked the perfect time of day for the shot so that there's plenty of colour in the sky and the reflections. Great shooting angle!

This image is immediately striking and pulls you straight in. The composition is quite minimalist, yet there's so much going on within the scene. I (Jeff) also like how the wall in the right foreground is both a leading line into the two faces looking this way and an entrance into what they're gazing at.

What an atmospheric shot. The smoke machine has added an extra element and the colours are great, but what really elevates the image is the reflection in the puddle - a nice bonus brought by the terrible weather earlier in the day. Excellent composition.

I (Jeff) like how the subject is so large in the frame. The photographer has also composed this image well by getting down on the young girl's eye level. The use of black and white also keeps the focus on the subject and her playful behaviour.

It's such a simple, yet striking image that almost looks like a lithograph or graffiti art. The simple shape and outline of the umbrella, the frame around the subject - it all works so well. It's one of those small moments that might seem mundane to everyone else, but has been captured in an artful way.

This is a superb shot, expertly captured. I (Jeff) love the stark black that fills most of the frame and the way the shape of the young deer is outlined by the perfect rim lighting. I would love to know how long it took to capture this!
