Railway Stations

April 2022

There's beautiful late-evening golden light and a pleasing composition with sharp leading lines drawing viewers' eyes into the scene and off into the cityscape in the distance – what's not to like? The shallower depth of field from f/2.8 is only noticeable on the left with the blurred signs, but then you have captured that extremely deep depth of field behind, which look great together. Congratulations on third place!

This would be an incredible scene even without the central focus of the red dot – like a real-life Where's Wally? / Where's Waldo? – but the crisp Bangladeshi flag kicks it up to an even higher level. It's an amazing image and I want it on my wall – reminds of my trip to Bangladesh a few years ago as well (although I didn't see train-top riding quite on this scale...). Loved that country. Congratulations on first place! Very well deserved.

Wow – what an excellent, memorable image! It feels like one scene from a larger photo essay telling the story of these people, which I would sure like to read if it exists. Jakarta looks like it can be an intimidating city, dense with life and human stories. Congratulations on second place!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked below 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Railway stations are evocative places. The start and end and throughpoints of journeys, escapes, adventures. Or maybe just a trip to the shops. They come in all different shapes and sizes, spanning 250 years of architectural history, from remote platforms with a shelter and a gate, to vast transport hubs servicing capital cities. There’s appeal for every kind of photographer - architectural, documentary, landscape - and a wealth of imagery to be had.
