This is a well seen and well executed image. Composition and viewpoint is great, with the camera directly head on to the gable end, and the shape of the roof mimicing the snowy mountain behind. Well exposed, with the mist and snowy areas white but not under or over exposed, and the rich golden yellow of the house standing out nicely in the bleak snowy whiteness. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
It can be very difficult composing and framing a shot such as this, with so many similar elements which fill the frame. It requires careful consideration and a strong photographic eye to decide what to include and what to omit, and where to crop the image for optimum effectiveness. Here you have done very well to achieve a fabulous image, full of interest with plenty for the eye to explore. There is not one obvious focal point, but I do not think that matters with a scene such as this. I love the colours and tones you have captured, which all contribute to a very successful shot. Congratulations on your winning image.
This type of image may not turn out to be a crowd-pleaser, but I love it and think it is photographically a strong image. A keen photographic eye had realised the potential of the sweeping curved road and other elements within the scene, to come together to make a great shot. I am unsure whether the running figure was planned or a happy accident, but the inclusion of the figure brings a vital human element to the image. Being picky, they may have been better placed a few paces further back in the brightest area of the street, but you were at least able to manage to avoid them disappearing altogether! The extreme contrast finish works well, as does the decision to present as a black and white image. There is just enough detail in the shape of the roofline and chimneys to work as silhouettes to describe the architecture. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

There are many stand-out elements in this image, but what I especially like is the contrast between the crisp straight lines of the architecture, and the circular wheel on the casually propped bicycle. The bike is for me a vital component of the shot, as due to the photographic and processing style, the image could have become a little sterile without it. The colours used on the brickwork is an obvious draw - I am unsure whether they are as seen or applied in post-editing, but whichever, it is effective and appealing to view. The brightness of the stark white lines on the road, and the inner rim of the bike wheel, add to the graphic of the shot. Congratulations on your second place finish.
This image creates a lovely mood, with the delicate sky after sunset and the little light illuminating the entrance door to the house. I especially like that your procesding and treatment of the image has been restrained, and everything looks quite natural with no ugly effects so often present in overprocessed sunset images The relative brightness of the sky behind the building enables the shape of the house to show as a near silhouette, but there is just enough light on the front to see window and door details, showing a home rather than a featureless shape. Lovely image, well done on your top ten placing.
It is a shame that the only information supplied with this image is "untitled" as it would be nice to have some hint as to the location of this shot. However, I really like this image, especially your capture of the light as it falls on the upper part of the furthest buildings. Although relatively tiny in the frame, I think the ornate lamp is a key part of the composition, as it provides an initial focal point. It looks to have been carefully positioned so there is just enough clear space around for it to be fully visible against the bright wall. Good use of black and white, which gives the image a great feel, as although dominated by darker tones, there is sufficient lightness to avoid the scene becoming oppressive. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
This is an image I kept coming back to during my reviews of the images, but in the end I decided I liked it so much it should be placed. The image is somehow both simple and detailled at the same time, and is very appealing to view. Often I find the inclusion of just a small strip of sky unnecessary, generally preferring a frame-filling subject, but the little patch of sky above and paving below lifts the image and prevents the house looking chopped off. The simple colours sre an obvious appeal, boldly coloured but not over-saturated. The white laundry compliments the image, as the colour echos the white door and window frames, and adds a bit of softness to contrast with the hard architectural structure. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
This is a well captured image which I find quite fascinating, as these two neighbouring homes are at the same time very different but also very similar. Presumably when built they would have looked identical, but over time have developed their own "personalities" which you have recognised and captured. Everything is in sharp focus, well exposed, and carefully composed and framed to keep uprights and horizontals lined and symmetrical etc. Such a simple subject, but effective as an image when captured in this way. Well done on your top ten placing.
I love the mood this image conveys, through the use of a constasty black and white processing finish, there is a slightly grim, gritty edge to the shot. Bang on brief for the contest, this image looks to show the upper section and roofline of a terraced street of ordinary home. Some may find the telegraph pole and numerous wires an irritation, but for me the inclusion of the pole and wires makes the shot, as it adds to the context, and breaks up the otherwise large expanse of sky. It was also there, and an obvious and vital structure in tbis residential street. Fabulous image, congratulations on your third place finish.
The contrast between the golden yollows and the whites and greys initially drew me to this image. I imagine the colours have probably been manipulated somewhat in processing, but that does not matter as the overall effect works well. Composition works well, with the positioning of the deepest curved section of the balconies positioned on the left third line of the frame. Exposure is spot on, as the brighter areas are not over-exposed, but there are not any areas where the shadows are too deep either. Great night time architectural image, nicely filling the frame with the subject. Well done on your top ten placing.

This contest is for your photos showing the exterior of buildings in which people live. The type of residential architecture you show can be any you choose, from a quaint rural cottage, a towering city apartment block, a suburbian family home, to a basic hut dwelling. You could decide to show a wide view of several residential properties, or closer shots of architectural details on individual dwellings. Whichever you choose, the buildings you photograph should clearly be for residential purposes, and photographed from the outside. Please do not enter photos of office blocks, commercial or industrial buildings etc, nor any interior shots. Images can be in either colour or black and white. I look forward to your entries.
