River Crossings

March 2022

A nicely composed image looking east down the Thames. You've caught great conditions in the calm river as well as a great mood with the cloud and sunlight bursting through. The reflection of the various bridges also ensure that there's no negative space. A really nice original composition of an iconic city. Very well done

This is a very good image. Not only have you timed the cable cars so they pass by some light source but the scale you have created make for a very compelling image. To shoot this at 18000 ISO as well as produce an end product of this standard really does attest to your skill whilst shooting in a moving boat as well as post processing. Well done on a fantastic image

A nicely composed image of an iconic bridge. You've caught a great atmosphere and the decision to use long exposure to ensure the clouds fill the frame is a good call. Great foreground interest with the outgoing tide to leave texture as well as leading lines make a very compelling image. Very well done

This image should be a on postcard for Conwy Castle. The composition is spot on. You've caught some lovely evening light which evokes a feeling of calmness. This is also very well exposed. The detail in the bridge and castle is nice & sharp. A viewing pleasure.

I really like this image. The composition is spot on. The image quality is also exceptional. My only issue with this image is the street light on the right hand side. It's quite overpowering and the flare is quite distracting. Everything else about this image is so good. Congratulations on your top-ten placing

This image evokes calmness as you've exposed for over 3 minutes, yet still managed to capture sharpness in the reflection. I like the use of the bridge as a leading line to the illuminated sports center as well as the soft distant ambient light. It does however feels like the image is leaning slightly to the left especially looking at the distant telegraph poles although that's a minor observation. Congratulations on your top-ten placing

I have seen this piece of engineering on many images but not one in conditions like this.

Shooting in foggy conditions like this is very challenging due to conflicting exposure but you have captured this scene exceptionally well. I like the use of the bridge as a leading line into nowhere.

Congratulations on a well deserved top-ten placing

What a beautiful image. The composition is spot on. By adding the walking individual you've have given a scale to this amazing piece of engineering. The conversion to black & white also adds to the mood. This is a very well presented image and a deserved winner. Very well done.

What makes this image stand out is the composition, image quality, and the rich blue tones.

Very good use of the bridge as a leading line as well. An image like this would be tough to expose but you have nailed this.

Congratulations on your top-ten placing.

This image is very well composed. This must've been tricky to expose for as the danger could be losing highlights in the white rapids area. You have captured a very chilled out scene and an image I would happily hang on my wall. A very deserving top-ten image and nice to see an original composition

What a fantastic image. You've achieved a very sharp image with your drone in what must've been quite challenging conditions. I'm not usually a fan of selective colour images but your processing really made this image jump out at me. Even the rigging is sharp.

Congratulations on a very fine image.

I absolutely love this image. The composition is awesome as is the light you've captured with the setting sun behind the hazy clouds. The post-processing makes your image look like a painting. It all comes together to make a stunning photo. Congratulations on your top-ten placing. Very well deserved.

Crossing water has been a human imperative since we first evolved, and we’ve gone from simply finding shallow water, or a fallen tree, to creating some of the most impressive engineering projects on the planet. The Duge Bridge in China, for example, crosses the Beipan River at a height of 565 metres! All the many stepping stones in the evolution of human river crossings are welcomed in this contest. And if a structure happens to cross water that is more sea than river, that is fine, as it’s in the spirit of the contest.

What an original approach to this brief. You've created a compelling image whilst ensuring your walking subject is captured with the rule of thirds in mind. The soft colours and what looks like soft light bouncing off the side of the wooden bridge brings out detail of the bridge supports. Overall, an excellent image. Very well done.
