This photograph works so well on a number of levels. As our subject is 'roads and highways', it is immediately apparent that the first thing we concentrate our gaze on is the bright, winding road against the dark landscape. We then examine the bright sunset sky top of frame. The co-relation of colours, contrast and hues between these two elements is noticeable. It is a dramatic and engrossing image.

This is an eerie image. Produced at night using a long exposure, the bright individual lights of the street lamps provide a moody quality to the scene - accentuated by the misty atmosphere. The shorter arrowed road signs that sit in centre of the frame are distinctly odd. So, too the red tail light streaks - they move away from us as if escaping from the scene.
We've seen plenty of winding roads amongst our many excellent photographs in this contest, but none with the tight corkscrew sensibility of this image. Produced using a long focal length lens at ground level, the squiggly shape of the road and its flat bright tone, are juxtaposed by the warm autumn hues of the adjacent woodlands.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** Criss-crossing our lands, wherever humanity has gone they’ve built roads to help them get there and back, and to transport the goods that they need to get established and thrive. The architecture and design of the roads, their accompanying signs and markings, and the kinds of vehicles on them can be a dead giveaway for the country or part of the world you’re in. They carry the life of a place around on them, and scenes of daily life play out on their edges.
