This is a stunning shot which stood out from the beginning. The subtle lighting helps to capture the beautiful colours and textures of the rocks inside the cave. The waterfall in the background draws your eye into the photo but does not take away from the main focus of the rocks. There is great depth of focus from the shiny rocks in the foreground through the layers of rock and the waterfall.

I love the simplicity of this photo and it narrowly missed the top 10. The composition is excellent wth the lines in the base rock drawing the eye down to the cluster of small stones. The smoothness of the rock and subtle colours are beautiful.

This one of the most effective black and white photos entered which narrowly missed the top ten. Black and white is a great way of highlighting the different textures of the rocks. This photo has excellent composition with the imposing shadowy cliff and the smooth stones in the foreground and the jagged rocks in the sea.

I Iove this macro shot which so beautifully captures the rugged texture of many rock formations. The rock maybe grey but the grooves and cracks are shown in great clarity. The clever use of light creates interesting shadows and highlights.

I love this dramatic photo! I generally avoided shots with people in them as I wanted the rocks to be the focus. However, in this case the one tiny solitary person on the path really creates a sense of scale. The rock formation is amazing with its deep grooves and subtle colours.

This is a bold shot and I love the simplicity of the composition. One huge rock and one tree silhouetted against the bright sky. The light is used cleverly to create beautiful shadows and highlight the interesting texture of the rock.

I love this photo as the rock is the focus, there is no water or sky to add to the composition. This rock formation is fascinating in itself. The texture and ridges create beautiful geometric shapes. The range of colours is amazing too!

There were so many photos of this particular rock formation. Its beautiful colours and smooth curves make it appealing from almost any angle. This shot for me was the best photo. The dramatic angle with the wavy slither of blue sky contrasts beautifully with the vivid orange of the rock.

It is the bleakness of this shot that makes it so appealing. The composition is excellent with foreground being dominated by the grey rock and the single tree drawing your eye in. The dramatic sky enhances the photo and contrasts well with the colour of rock. The cracks in the rock and the deep furrows all add interest for the viewer.

This shot proves that a great photo of can just focus on the rock formation without the need for dramatic skylines or seascapes. The range of colours are beautiful and are perfectly balanced. The bright light captures all the nooks and crannies and creates many interesting shapes.

Rocks have interesting shapes, colours and textures which are great for macro or wider shots. Whether cliffs, caves or rock pools try to find an original angle or perspective. Rocks in their natural setting only please, no historic stones or crystals or gemstones.

There were many photos where the rock formation made an interesting shape. This photo is the most effective. The choice of black and white really helps with the clarity of the shot. The texture and variation in colour is captured beautifully. The simple background ensures the eye focuses on the shape of the rock.
