Great contest!

I really like this image. I think the monochrome theme works really well for the chess pieces, and the fallen king having the movement blur is a clever addition. It is a lovely example of second curtain sync flash. The DOF is a little shallow (the white rook and black knight are out of focus) - I personally would have had all of the pieces in focus. Overall, a great image.

This is a great example of second curtain sync flash. Without the flash, it's likely that the boys' arms would have not been seen at all (like the one to the right that is all blurred). To capture it out of a studio setting is likely more difficult as the lighting is less controlled. Very well done to the photographer! Love it!

I think this is a lovely example of second curtain sync flash. The slow falling of the feather creates very defined movement lines and the feather is very sharp. The black and white contrast works very well for me. Great picture!

Standard flash techniques are interesting and very useful, but second curtain sync flash (SCSF) has amazing outcomes. With SCSF, the flash triggers at the end of the exposure rather than the beginning which creates a trail of where a moving subject has been. This is different to a slow shutter speed showing blurred movement. The subject is frozen with the flash at the end of the exposure so it still stays sharp. I'd like to see your photos using this technique. Examples that would work well are dancing, sports, vehicles, toys; but any random moving object can be a good subject.

Meet the judge

This is a lovely example of second curtain sync flash, and the sort of image I was hoping to see. The blur of the dancer clearly shows her movement while her features are in focus. The red contrasts with the black beautifully and is very eye-catching.

While this image does not stand out to me in terms of composition, lighting etc, it clearly shows the use of second curtain sync flash for the competition. I like the light trails, especially of the car going around the bend, and the mini is captured fairly clearly.

While I personally don't find the overall picture particularly interesting in terms of lighting and composition, I love the movement trails of the dice. I like how the dice get more insubstantial the closer they are to the camera, and it is an interesting way to show the effects of second curtain sync flash.

While this image doesn't stand out much to me in terms of composition, lighting etc, it is a great example of second curtain sync flash for the competition. The mini is almost solid, and the movement lines are well defined. I think it is a nice attempt at a difficult technique.

This is another great example of second curtain sync flash at work. The black background ensures that the subject is the main focus. The movement lines are very clear, and the dice are nearly solid. I personally would have liked all the dice to be in focus, but nevertheless it is a great image.

Another lovely dancing image. I like the movement blur of where she has been - it looks more abstract than some of the others. The dancer is captured clearly, and the lack of detail in the background ensures that the focus is on her. Lovely photograph

This photograph is eye-catching to me, It shows the movement blur clearly, and the ducky is nice and clear. I like the composition and the simplicity of the subject - just a yellow duck on blue water. I find it cute, and it stood out to me.

This is adorable. The child is nearly opaque at the end, and her features are clear. The movement blur shows detail while still remaining smokey. I like the lack of distraction in the background, and the contrast of her lovely pink dress. Well captured photograph!
