The positioning of the photographer on the hill looking down has created a spectacular visual image. The use of high contrast black and white gives extra bite to the long shadows cast over this scene. The exposure is excellent with details in the shadows including two people sitting under the wingspan of the giant sculpture we actually never get to see. The addition of the person on the bike is just well timed and the darkened clouds add menace to the photograph and what the image also does is give us the viewer a sense of the space in which this landmark is positioned within the community. Great capture and use of shadows.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Reliant on a strong light source - the sun shining, or an unobscured bulb or flame - shadows are generated whenever light means an obstacle. They offer an interesting challenge to shoot, requiring a shift in mindset as the photographer starts looking for something different, the inferred presence of a subject rather than necessarily the subject itself.

The patchwork quality of the shadows which fall onto this detailed scene works because they complement the textures of the fabrics on the bed and the small details that our eye is attracted to within the picture. The teddy bear sitting next to these wonderful fluffy cushions and the deep red walnut of the dressing table next to the bed. The deeply saturated colors really stand out and turn this potentially ordinary subject into the most amazing complex environment where our eye darts across the entire image. This is a wonderful example of what shadows and light play can do in photography. A domestic scene becomes far more than its parts. Well done.

Meet the expert judge

Such a happy and well seen photograph. In the Martin Parr tradition of humor within photography this image is such fun that it brings a smile to my face. The photographer has worked hard to make this into a great picture. The tight crop and use of bright colors turns this image into a wonderful postcard and snapshot of the beach experience on holiday. The use of shadows elevates this image into a superb capture. Really well seen.
