As with all my Top 10, this was a picture that grabbed my attention from the outset as I looked through the entire entry of 3,500! The impact comes from the simplicity of the graphic design and interesting body-shapes in the row of diners. For me, the special element in this is the splash of light illuminating the lady's arm. This is a very stylish silhouette - well done!

Once again, impact comes from the elegant simplicity of the composition. The heavily textured wall acts as a strong contrast to the plain, flat black shapes of the shadowed areas and our main subject. The stooped posture of the elderly passer-by makes for an eye-catching subject, with his cap, walking stick and shopping bag.. Well done.
A very creative example of street photography that makes effective use of both shadows and silhouette. The strength of the picture lies in the use of shape/design, with the shadow's lines complementing the architectural background and echoing the shape of the boy's legs. The all important cameo of the boy with the ball captures the moment perfectly; the ball catching the light mid-air.
The atmosphere is palpable - you can feel the chill in the air! The glorious light and moody recession offer the perfect setting for our main figures as they walk through the avenue. Black and white has eliminated the distraction of colour and emphasised the design created through your viewpoint. Well done.

The use of shadows and/or silhouettes in photography can be a subtle but powerful way to convey drama and mood. They have the power to capture the viewer's imagination and draw them into the story that your shots are telling. Have a good think about the effects of lighting and light placement before you shoot your winning shot...!

This is an intriguing image - I love the scaling and juxtaposition of figures and the tower. The figures have a ghosting effect that suggests some post production work. The fast shutter speed would not create this effect, so I wondered if this was a composite/layered image. However it has been achieved the final result is very pleasing.
Once again, impact comes from the graphic simplicity of the composition. The heavily textured wall acts as a strong contrast to the plain, dark shapes of the shadowed areas and our main subject. The stooped posture of the passer-by makes for an eye-catching subject, with just a hint of light catching the colour of the can. Well done.
This is a terrific image, with a creative low viewpoint and very effective shallow depth of field. The only problem is that it is not on brief! The figure is well lit and far from being silhouetted, whilst the element of shadow from the backlighting is minimal. Please read the brief thoroughly and check out any terms you are not familiar with, for future competitions....and good luck with this, elsewhere.
This is a terrific image, with a strong viewpoint and very effective limited depth of field. The only problem for me is the overall presentation. The prominence of your name and logo is a real distraction and I am afraid it pulls my attention away from the image. You are not the only photographer to take this approach and I hope you will see when you look at my top images how effective a 'clean' presentation is, in comparison.
This is a terrific image, with a creative low viewpoint and very effective use of leading lines. The only problem is that it is not on brief! The figures are well lit and far from being silhouetted, whilst there are no shadows at all, just reflections.
