Rubbish

July 2014

It's amazing to know that this image was taken of a room that was found as it is. Every item looks perfectly placed as if it was the site of a feature film. The light is impeccable and perfectly exposed. The shadow detail is right where it should be and the highlights hold in a perfect place to not create an over contrasted image. The way items leave and enter the frame at certain points is done in a very thoughtful way. A successful image all around.

What an amazing contrast of light and dark, of the serene and foul, of the vast landscape and seclusion. This image is successful for so many reasons, but it is very subtle. At first glance you may overlook the beautiful reflections of the the blue sky in the murky waters of the waste. You may overlook the wonderful green texture of the wall and how the green colour leads you from the darkness out into the green landscape. The green plants growing over the industrial structure perfectly combine both nature and man-made. The rubbish in the image is clearly here, but is only made visible by the light of the beautiful landscape. A perfect solution to this assignment.

On first read, I noticed how beautiful this landscape was and I can imagine walking through this field on a perfect spring day. You then notice the upside down cart in the stream. You start to wonder if this is the site of a horrible accident. The mystery of this image is what makes it stand out for me. By finding a discarded item to photograph, but then compose it in a way to create a beautiful narrative, is a great visual solution to the assignment.

The light and the wonderfully muted colours immediately caught my attention in this beautiful shot. The power lines and the lines of the stone wall leading away from the focal point and perfectly contrast the vertical lines on the back wall. The yellow wall leading down creates an unknowing space within the photograph which allows the viewer to create their own narrative. Photographing the two trash bins as if their were portraits of two people created a perfectly subtle portal of "rubbish". A very successful photograph all around.

The photographer found this perfect moment and it is a great comparison of beauty and decay. The colors of the image are wonderful. The many shades of blue that fall into the deep color of the water play perfectly with the two colours of the glove. The image is beautiflly haunting as the glove has so much personality and we can start to imagine the person that once wore the glove, where it has been, what kind of work it accomplished. This image is not just a photo of a glove in the water, but a portrait of the person who once wore it. This is what makes the image successful.

The light, colour and texture had me constantly circling back to this image. It was the perfect decision for the photographer to use the flash here. By giving it that harsh pop of light the image was brought to life and it feels timeless. What I find more important than the beautifully placed items on the table are the items just outside of the image. I wonder what the rest of the room looks like or even what the rest of the table has on it. By photographing such a secluded area of a room, the photographer created a perfect narrative.

Conceptually this image perfectly accomplished the assignment. It is one thing to just photograph a piece of rubbish that may seem interesting or have beautiful colours, but to have found items discarded that tell stories of a lifetime is much more profound. Every single one of these flowers were to pay tribute to a loved one's life. These aren't just dead flowers on a street. They are a symbol of gratitude for a lifetime of memories. On a technical note, the composition of the flowers pouring out of the left-hand side of the image is beautiful. The harsh light perfectly contrasts the subject matter, and the subtle way part of the flowers is hidden in the shadows allows our eye to move around the flowers looking for more.

This photograph has such a rich and beautiful contrast from the deep blacks to the bright whites. The lines within the image play a great role with the composition - from the leaning piece of wood in the front to the old metal ladder on the left. However, I don't think the lines are enough to break up the busyness of the actual main content. The figures in the image are overpowering and simply making the image too busy. Perhaps more space around the image would have helped to open it up. Overall, a very successful technical image.

I really loved this image. The colors are really beautiful, from the blue sky to the teal roof to the slight bit of red peeking out of the shack. The distant boat and the structure on the left-hand side help create mystery, but also keep the viewer focused on the main image. My only concern is that I don't see this image as related to the theme of 'rubbish' - this is someone's dwelling and not rubbish.

This image immediately required viewer to stop and investigate into the photograph deeper. You start to examine the woman sitting on the curb and ask yourself "by what light source is her face being lit up?" You are forced to look deeper into the shadows to find a narrative within the store fronts. I admire the steady hand of the photographer, as the focus is perfectly placed on the trash collector. The contrast and tones of the this image are perfectly adjusted as well. The deep rich blacks of the photograph contrast the highlights in such a way that brings the image to life right off the screen. The photographer captured a perfect moment.

I love the graphic quality of this image. The hard lighting is a great way to compliment the composition of the photograph. I was looking for images that told a story with the rubbish it featured. I wish this image told more of a story with the rubbish within it. Maybe if the rubbish were not the bottles of alcohol, but rather graphic elements that spoke more of a narrative it would work better. But overall, this image has great impact and is visually pleasing.

This image was amongst my Top 15 for awhile as I love the use of multiple images. It begins to tell a story and attempts to create a narrative of this specific place. It would have been wonderful to see images of the landscape far way to give us another perspective and to place the close-up images in a better context. Even though the two 'red bull' cans are different cans, I would refrain from using two images of the same can to diversify the imagery shown. It's a wonderful concept though.
