The photographer has demonstrated an outstanding ability to tell a story in a single image. We know what is happening although we may not know the country where it is taken, or the exact location. I also was particularly attracted to the strong shapes and vibrant colours of the costumes that are wonderfully orchestrated within the frame. The sideway glance of the student and the gesture of the teacher also present arresting focal points.

Meet the expert judge

Photographs of mountains can often be little more than clichéd-ridden ‘views’, but this image - with the wandering diagonal ridge and the walker, who gives it scale and human interest - shows that this photographer can use the rectangular frame very creatively. Shooting against the light can be a nightmare, but this image demonstrates that it can be an advantage too!

Using the ambiguous aspects of the medium, this photographer knows that the passing pedestrian will appear to have wings, with the painted sky echoing the real thing above the fence, which has been painted to look like a stone wall. The overall surreal nature of this image, and its wittiness are of a very high calibre.
