Sound

This was an early entry and went in my keep pile quite early. We had lots of band and concert entries in this competition but I held this image back as it dares to be different. There is a sense of innocence in this image, a young lady performing in the street looking very vulnerable in her stance. The image colours and atmosphere have been handled extremely well creating a sense of evening calm, yet you have a young electric guitarist breaking that silence - so 10/10 for hitting the brief. Focus on the girls face could be slightly better, but I love the depth of field. Well done.

A great idea, fireworks certainly hit the brief and delivers the 'sound' I was looking for. This image stood out from the other firework entries as the colours are fantastic. I also love the silhouette of the foreground giving a base and context. It would be nice to see more of the top of the image, it was either out of field of view or has been cropped off. Lovely image, well captured, well done!

So well captured, great sharpness, composition, detail and timing to capture an image which is of great quality. There were many music/ band based images in this competition, and this one stood out as I like the simplicity whilst maintaining context in the background. The main character also really pops out thanks to the lighting (or post processing). It looks great on my large monitor, and deserves a top 5 place. Well done.

This image made the top 10 and stood out from the rest of the crowd images as the timing is perfect. The character chosen screams character and noise - delivering the 'sound' I was looking for in this competition. I can imagine this image was full of colour, so the conversion to monochrome works well to remove colour distraction and make the main character pop from the image. Well done, a great capture and moment in time.

This is one of those timeless images, street photography at its best. I admire anyone who nestles themselves amongst the fired up nature of a football crowd and takes images like this. It certainly works well in monochrome as it brings the characters and noisy atmosphere out in the image. The depth of field has been handled well to maintain interest in the main characters, whilst keeping a blurry background for context. Well done, a well deserved top 10.

This to me is an iconic image and hit exactly what I was looking for in this brief. The timing is perfect really showcasing the atmosphere and sound in this image. This image stood out from all of the other crowd based images as there is enough surrounding subjects in the image to give context, but just the right balance to maintain focus on the main character. The monochrome conversion and processing have been handled well making the character pop. The more I look at this image the more I like it and notice new subtle details, like the cigarette in the air. Well done!

Wow, what an image - a well deserved winner. There is bucket loads of character and energy in this image, topped off with a great monochrome conversion which ooozes quality. It was the quality of this image that stood out for me, great focus, sharpness and attention to detail. I love the way the monochrome conversion and background have been handled, really making the lady pop. 10/10, nailed the brief with a quality image - well done.

An image that expresses power, and does well through the monochrome conversion. I liked this image as it was different to many of the entries, and it certainly hits the brief. Well captured and great to see something different amongst the entries - well done!

There is a very Johnny Cash Folsom Prison feeling about this image which I love making it stand out from the rest of the singer/ band images entered. The monochrome conversion, composition and lighting gives it a timeless feeling. Very well done!
