Stained Glass Windows

This is a perfectly composed and balanced photograph. The backlighting and exposure of the glass is perfect, rendering the design of the glass beautifully. It also enables enough light to enter the space and provide information about what kind of space it is. The minimal, neutral features and tones of which contrast and compliment the intricate, colourful and busy features of the stained glass. An excellent photograph.

The balance between the stained glass and the interior detailing is perfect. The glass is brighter and more contrasty which draws the eye to it. But the detail of the columns and fluting provide plenty of information and interest. The gentle arc of these lean into frame and act as a framing device around the stained glass.

This is a beautifully composed and considered photograph. Our subject, the stained glass is centrally framed within a darkened recess. That darkness provides a counterpoint to the detailed design and colour of the much brighter window. This lightness and intricacy contrasts with the solidity and neutrality of the stonework. It also neatly compliments the side-lit font below. The photograph's formal, classical simplicity suits the subject perfectly.

Coventry Cathedral is an excellent interior to explore the subject of stained glass. The design of the building provides a unique series of glazed apertures which have been carefully balanced with image and colour.

The photographer has successfully captured this. The formal composition provides a stable frame for the viewer to gaze at these amazing windows. The extemes of contrast from those at the top centre, contrast with the darker ones to the right and below, adding a note of drama.

I very much appreciate how the photographer has structured this photograph. It appears to be a close-up composition of foregrounded stained glass, which is deliberately out-of-focus. What is in focus is the reflected image of other stained glass windows (the photographer notes that the former is a contemporary design, the latter is traditional).

The bright colours and black edges - so representative of stained glass - are clearly evident. The shallow depth-of-field and wavey reflection combine to create a very refreshing take on what is usually a formal and conservative subject. Wonderful.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** If alongside your interest in photography you are also a serial visitor of churches, you will no doubt have tried to capture the magnificence of stained glass with your camera. Whilst not confined solely to religious settings, this is where most of us see it in its splendour. Photographing it effectively can be tricky, especially when trying to balance the exposure of the brightly lit glass with the interior of the building within which it is set.
