Steps, Stairs and Escalators

January 2024

Beautifully balanced, one of the finest circular stairway in the many hundreds entered. This image swirls your attention perfectly, from the top left corner and bottom right corner, right into the centre of the image. Interesting marks on the surface too. A fantastic composition.

The two figures are perfectly poised at the top steps of this long staircase, making you want to know what they see at the top. The modernist windows and curving architecture, adds to the effect. Love the pastel colours, symmetry and balance.

Texture can really make an image, and that certainly makes this image stand out. A stepped pathway leading into a bamboo forest where you can't see round a bend in the path. With textured hedging too. Lines going everywhere. A Japanese work of art and beautifully captured.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Whether spiral, straight, wooden or metal‚ architects of all eras have found creative and pleasing ways to weave steps and stairs into their buildings. Escalators might offer a little less opportunity for design flair, but as photographic subjects they all share the same visual opportunities - an array of patterns, repetitions, and leading lines that are impossible to ignore.
