Sunshine

It was a delight to spend time looking at this photograph. The light amplifies the colours and you can almost smell the fabrics as they bask in that sunshine. The frame is well balanced and caught at just the right moment. Congrats on first place.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** It’s a cheery weather forecaster that announces a sunny day to come, and with good reason. It brings out the best in us, and in the world around us. For a photographer it puts a spring in our step, and transforms our photography. Bright, saturated hues, sharp shadows, rich blue skies and frames bursting with energy. This is a broad brief that could encompass many themes, but with an emphasis on the particular mood and imagery that bright sunshine helps create.

Meet the expert judge

It was tough choosing my top two photographs. The visual storytelling here is quite lovely. The shadows of the people mirror the different ground levels in the frame and the sunshine that edges around the main subject is a lovely contrast. Well done.

With sculpture they always say the key is to strip away as much as possible until what you are trying to covey becomes unquestionably clear. That arguably applies here. Taking the light and colour away from the people and animals leaves behind beautiful silhouettes and celebrates that warm life giving sunshine that beams down through the image. Wonderful.
