Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on 3rd place! What a fantastic composition! It is almost an abstract charcoal sketch. Drone shots can sometimes get a bit repetitive, relying purely on the fact they are shot from above. The technology is all that gives it the originality. However, to see something with real artistic creativity like this is far rarer. I loved this the moment I saw it. Excellent image!
Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on 2nd place! There's a wonderful calm balance to this photo. The focus on the child is perfect, allowing for the gentle bokeh on the Christmas tree and fireplace behind. The triangular composition of the child, along with the triangular nature of the scissors and paper are beautifully echoed in the cutout decorations. Great composition, lighting and story!
Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on 1st place! I have seen this image before, but it was one I was pleased to see again. The wonderful shape of the tree with all the twigs and branches and texture, contrasts with the bleak emptiness of a snow-covered landscape. You can't help but feel a deep sense of isolation. Beautifully captured and edited.
Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on being in my top 10! This is a really moody, atmospheric winter forest scene, with a strong sense of depth and coldness in the forest. The blue shift helps to emphasise this. The added brightness in the centre works well in the smaller version of this, but when I opened it up full screen on my desktop, to my eyes it felt a little overdone and if toned down a fraction would create more impact. However, it is a superb image :)
Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on being in my top 10! I love the cold, moody, atmospheric feel to this image, and the way the river draws the eye into the photo. The diagonals of the half-fallen trees and branches add to the energy of the photo. It might be still and calm, but there is a sense of anticipation, as though something untoward might happen to the unwary :)
Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on being in my top 10! This is the kind of shot that is easily missed. In fact it doesn't exist until you take the camera to it, work out your composition - what to include and what to leave out - crop it to have the strong diagonal, and then balance the light and dark in the black and white conversion. I love the thought that has gone into creating a strong image out of something many of us might have just walked past without recognising the potential in it.
Thank you for entering the Tales of Midwinter contest, and congratulations on being in my top 10! A wonderful balance in the composition, but it's also required just the right level of colour editing to get the perfect contrast of the warm glow of the lights with the cool blues of the surrounds. Very nicely done!

Create or capture an image that tells a story of midwinter. It can be about Christmas, Hanukah, the Solstice, New Year or any other winter festival. It could be about the weather, the food, the people, the outfits, the landscape, or the wildife. I am looking for something that conveys a mood, feeling or story about this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere.
