The Moon

I loved this image since the moment I saw it browsing through the hundreds of entries. I love that it features the moon prominently, and not at all casually, but in a different 'light'. Although slightly blurred in the background, the moon is, in fact, still the star of the picture. Without it, the flowers and insects on the foreground wouldn't be visible, and the picture wouldn't exist. Without it, we wouldn't be able to imagine the nightly life of these insects. It's a picture that conveys intimacy and peace all the same. Well done!

This image evokes a peaceful and intimate scene that is almost magical to watch. The photographer has composed this shot very well, with the moon in the middle, the straight line of beach huts underneath and the green/grey cloud disappearing right into the top corner of the frame. Simple and striking. I love the tones in this image too - in particular the contrast between the purple-ish sky and the hint of green in the clouds. All in all, a wonderful (and unique!) portrait of the moon that makes me want to be there too. Well done!

The perfectly centred (and perfectly exposed) moon, framed by the train over the hill and the low clouds on the horizon, makes for perfectly thought-out composition in this image. Whilst still being a beautiful portrait of the moon, it certainly isn't a boring one. In fact, this image easily stands out from the majority of the contest entries. The train, clouds and starry sky make this image a very fascinating portrait indeed, all whilst still keeping the moon in prime position and showcasing its beauty. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Astrophotography is a thrilling genre of photography. The moon, with its size and proximity to the Earth offers a unique opportunity to shoot a planetary mass in some detail without needing the most specialist of equipment. On cloudless nights the moon is a presence that can bring a source of night light, and provide an evocative addition to nighttime scenes. For the avoidance of doubt, the moon must be visible in each submitted image, although it if is entirely incidental to the scene then it is unlikely to be awarded.
