This image is incredibly interesting, as there is so much happening in the shot. The busyness of the image and the fact that it shows backstage makes this photo unique and a real insight into what happens behind the scenes. The composition is brilliant!

The energy captured in this image is wonderful. The motion of the fabric and dress is almost tangible. Even if a little of the shawl is missing it does not affect its beauty. Performance photography is about capturing the energy of the moment as this image does so well.

This beautiful image of the dancers’ feet is a great example of how a well captured detail image works very well in performing arts. The motion on the dresses are greatly captured and the yellow brings the out the shoes. Beautiful!

The conductors’ energy and emotion is beautifully captured by the photographer in this crisp image. A major part of performing arts photography is to do exactly that, to capture the emotion of the moment, and in this case the photographer has succeeded immensely.

The contrast of the dark background with the colourful subject works extremely well. The subject stands out in an almost 3D image. The motion of the props adds to the image’s magical feeling. It’s a fantastic image that reflects a great eye.

Amazing photo! The contrast between the brightness on the performer, and the darkness and silhouetted audience makes this image very strong. Through framing, the photographer has directed our focus to the stage. It is a wonderful composition that empowers the performer.

Beautifully captured. This high contrast image highlights brilliantly the eyes and expression of the musician. It’s a great example of how black and white photos work well in the performing arts. The simplicity and yet strength of this image is magnetic.

This clean and dynamic image is fantastic. The main light coming from behind the subject gives a lightbox quality to it. The subject almost silhouetted and well centred makes the image very powerful. Straight out of a fashion magazine! Great photo.

This beautiful image has a great amount of detail for the viewer to explore. The photographer has captured wonderfully an intimate moment behind the scenes, that not often the audience has the opportunity to see it. The warm lighting makes this image even more magical.

The angle chosen by the photographer makes this image unusual and special. Different angles are always welcome in performing arts photography as it brings an innovative point of view. The performer’s facial expression and the haze behind the subject make this image even more exceptional.

This image is both, strong and delicate at the same time. The photographer has managed to capture the lightness and flow of the fabric, as well as the strength of the performer. It's a poetic image, it's warm colours resemble a flower in the wind. It's beautiful.

The composition on this image is exquisite and the photographer had a great insight to do it in black and white. The absence of colour quite often enhances the subject and details of the images, its textures and shapes. This image is a great example how beautiful black and white images can be in performing arts.

The way that the light falls on the young performer’s arm and face gives a paint like quality to this image. The lighting with its shadows and highlights resembles a Rembrandt. The tight crop on the performer makes the image quite intimate and unique.

Photographing the performing arts (arts that are performed for an audience, such as dance, theatre and music) can be a wonderful way to combine your enjoyment of those arts with an interest in photography. Often it benefits to get privileged access to the front of the audience, but then equally impressive can be photography which shows the performance in its entirety and context, audience and all. There is technical skill involved in shooting performance that is often dimly lit, especially when movement is involved.
