This photograph transported me to a place familiar to me but only from reading books and watching films. This is an incredibly sedcutive photograph and this is hightened by the quality of the warm light on the the top of the tombstone and the lushness of the red flowers. On one hand i'm transported to the Garden of Eden - the idea of creation yet the subject matter is the opposite. It's these mixed ifeas and the beauty of the image that made this really stand out amongst many strong submissions. A worthy winner.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked below 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Grave markers in the form of tombstones, headstones and gravestones range from the simple and understated, to the ornate and exuberant. Graveyards and cemeteries are special places, and popular for photographers too. They have a feel all of their own - quiet, contemplative spaces where past lives are all around us, honoured in stone and words. The challenge for the photographer can be in producing imagery that is original, given how familiar we are with them.

This takes me back to watching classic John Ford westerns. Their is alot to really admire in this photograph. The technical skills and composition of the image from the graves in the foreground then this wonderful symbol of Americana in the wtare tower to the right. The darkened skies add extra tension to the scene as does the expanse within the image. Are the people buried withi this space old prisioners of the Jail or is their a town out of sight. The power of photography to isolate and offer a different reading to what actually maybe within the area. A powerful image and worthy of its high placing.

Photography is often about waiting. Waiting for the light, wiating for the elements to come together. This sombre photograph is a perfect example of these elements coming together. The formal composition from foreground to the softer mist of the background work incredibly well, as do the darker greens and highlights hitting the angled gravestones. This is a photograph the photographer has had to make, to find then have the skill to understand how best to make it. Congratulations.
