This photo, taken on a Nikon FM2, is a perfect example of how older technology is still relevant in the modern, digital era. The silhouettes of the rowers contain just enough detail thanks to the small strips of highlights to give dimensionality to the boat. The mist during golden sunrise conveys a sense of quiet and calm that the river no doubt has.
This image is not only technically proficient in composition but also in terms of nailing exposure times and brightness between lights. Through taking several exposures and layering them in Photoshop, the photographer has revealed detail in darker, shadowed areas whilst avoiding brighter, glared highlights from the overhead lights.
A striking, powerful, graphical image that captivates the eye immediately, few others in the competition drew our attention quite like this. We love that it’s simple and complex all in one photo. Filling the frame in this way gives a sense of size and grandeur to the balloons that otherwise would be lost if floating alone in the sky.

Taken at midday during the 24-hour darkness in Antarctica, the moon provides just enough light to light up this mysterious landscape with a Pistonbully’s lights adding interest in the foreground of the scene. The vehicle invites our eyes to fall into the distance, following its imminent journey across the ice.
