This image was taken at the Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A pond in the grounds of the Lanna Dhutanka temple provided the reflection that allowed for this stunning symmetrical composition. Lanterns evenly occupy the sky and the silhouetted crowd has been captured crisply. There was no room for error as the lanterns were only released once.

This image screams travel. It features beautiful architecture, glorious weather and an airplane to boot. It was taken in the medieval city of Rhodes, Greece. The contrast between the highlights and shadows really enhance the texture of the architecture. The direct sunlight and imposing angle was captured by lying flat on the floor.

This rather magnificent building is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Composition is key when photographing architecture and like the building itself, this image is almost perfectly symmetrical. The warm interior lighting pops against the cool hues of this blue hour image and the clear sky complements the clean aesthetic of the epic structure.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this a surrealist image, but it’s in fact Panna Meena ka Kund, a magnificent stepwell in Jaipur, India. The f/9 aperture has allowed for sharpness throughout the image and the 1/800 sec shutter speed was more than fast enough to freeze the figure ascending the steps. The crop leaves out any distractions beyond the steps, leaving the viewer questioning whether they might go on forever.

The photogenic village of Oia, Santorini, is a photography hotspot, but this jaw-dropping capture certainly stands out from the crowd. It’s a two-shot time blend that comprises a beautiful pink sunset and the village lights at blue hour. The subtlety of the blend means the image still feels very natural.

N-Photo Photographer of the Year only accepts entries taken with a Nikon camera. However, we couldn’t help but leave a review for this fantastic image, which caught our judges’ attention. The microlight has been captured crisply and we like how the Annapurna peaks are framed in the background. A high-flying image for sure!
