Urban Grime

A very simple image but a very eye catching one. Supermarket trolleys seem to get everywhere these days and the fact that this one is in a murky brown river makes it stand out as it lies sadly there. The green algae gives the photo a painterly dimension.

What I like about this picture is the colour palette used in the editing. The geometric forms in the image are bold and the dash of blue is a focal point to the eye. The word 'Giron' almost makes the picture graphic in detail.

I have chosen this in first place mainly due to the photographer's clever use of the reflection of the buildings in the mirror. It almost looks as if there is a doorway in the wall and the buildings are through it. It has been well composed and the muted colours add to the griminess of the subject.

I am unsure what is creating the rounded shape at the bottom of the image but it is almost as if we are looking through some sort of lens at the dilapidated alleyway. I like the way the orange brickwork stands out from the greyness in the rest of the photograph.

I like the colour palette in this picture and overall feeling of decay that it shows. The patches of brickwork, the windows and the various horizontal and vertical lines make it a patchwork of decay. I like the fact that there seems to be someone still living there as it looks like some washing has been hung outside one of the windows on the bottom right of the image.

This atmospheric photograph works extremely well in black and white and the fact that it is so dark lets us clearly see the stream of smoke issuing from either the street or a building. Having the two distant figures is also a bonus

One thinks of Broadway as a magical place with theatre lights shining, leading us into the worlds created onstage. However this one outside the theatre where 'Hamilton' is being staged is far from that romanticised version we think of for Broadway. I like the fact that it has been edited in Black and White and that the theatre's signs can still be seen leading me to believe the photographer carefully chose his/her position before taking the image.

Perhaps there is not too much grime in this picture but it is a moment captured in time as the children gaze up, obviously taken by the art work on the wall. Although accidental the colour of the girl with the pearly earing matches the side of the building on the right but the splashed of red on one child and the wall are an added bonus. I think if I had edited this I would have cropped out the blue window frame on the left and taken a little bit off the bottom but that's just me.

Such a simple image and one with perhaps a sense of humour in it. The positioning of the chair in the image is good although I am wondering if I took this if I would have placed it on the right of the frame but again just a personal thing. I like the various muted tones which helps create the mood.

There is a sense of sadness in this image as the man gazes out onto the streets from his home. There may not be a lot of grime but to me this is created by the graffiti scrawled n the building. I like the various horizontal and vertical lines and the photographer's decision to place the man in the top left corner. The picture also benefits from being in black and white.
