On the face of it, a plain yellow shirt hanging on a rotary clothes line. However the creative capture of the light, with the sunlight shining though the fabric from behind allowing the pegs, line and garments behind to show up as silhouette forms, which makes this a very strong image. A well-observed shot, well done on your top ten placing.
I love the combination of the relative simplicity and messiness combined in this image. The small number of elements make this a fairly minimalistic shot, but I love the tangles of the sheet as it has been blown around the washing line, and the tatty patches of worn paint on the plasterwork. A very mundane subject, but a great capture nonetheless. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
I love the clean and simple composition in this image, but whilst simple, for me the scene is far from uninteresting. Aside from the brightly coloured cloths pegged out to dry, there is enough textural detail in the relatively wide expanse of plain wall to hold the attention. Some would maybe have been tempted to crop or clone out the two extraction vents, but for me they are a key feature and somehow help balance the composition. Simple but effective, well done on your top ten placing.
I love the languid feel to this shot, with all the feel of a lazy afternoon around siesta time, with the chores done, washing out to dry, and only a dog out on the quiet streets. I like the composition and framing of the shot, face-on to the three different dwellings. This allows the viewer to compare and contrast the architecture, which all adds interest to the image. Congratulations on your third place finish.
What I especially love about this image is the way the light has been captured. The sunlight looks strong, but there is some softer dappled light on the steps, and there is a golden warmth to the light too, which brings a lovely mood to the shot. The hanging washing is very much the subject of the photo, complemented by the motorbike, which also looks to be in use as a further area on which to dry the laundry. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
This is a scene so many would pass be without a second glance (or even a first glance!) but you have realised the potential of the scene for a great capture. Key is the strong sunlight and associated shadows being cast, which add a different dimension to the composition. I am not sure if the scene is exactly as found, but the inclusion of the laundry basket is great, as it adds context and balance, and somehow holds the composition together. Great textures on the rough brickwork, contrasting nicely with the softer drape of the clothing. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
A great creative shot of the rooftops and a line of washing, rendered into striking black shapes silhouetted against the white sky. The contrasts have been pushed to the maximum in processing, but the result is effective. Being so far away from a more standard capture of the scene may not be for everyone, but the shapes of the washing and chimneys make for a great abstract take on the subject. Well done on your top ten placing.
What really strikes me about this image is the richness of the tones, which perfectly conveys the nature and atmosphere of this broad Venetian backstreet. The two small figures bring life to the shot and provide an initial focal point, before the eye explores the architecture and hanging washing, of which there is certainly a grand display! The lighting has been well handled, as the scene looks to be very contrasty, but the shadows have been lifted sufficiently to reveal full details in those areas, without any gaudy HDR effects. Congratulations on your winning image.

In this contest I want to see your photos showing washing/laundry hanging outside to dry. Please include at least one item of washing, not just pegs or an empty washing line. Entries can be in colour or black and white, but the hanging washing must be clearly visible within the image. I look forward to seeing your entries.

The stark white of the building facade initially draws the attention. I love the graphic quality to the image, with the regimented rows and columns of the square windows neatly arranged within the frame. Although relatively small within the overall scene, the hanging laundry is s clear subject, made even stronger by the capture and treatment of the shadows, which despite the high-key effect, are still strong. A very well-observed and well captured image. Well done on your top ten placing.
Meet the judge
I love the simplicity of this shot, with the three white cloths adorning the external chimney breast, flanked by a door and window. Despite the simplicity of the composition, the imagd is certainly not lacking interest, as there are plenty of other little details for the eye to explore, such as the bin, the little potted plant and the yellow cloth. Colours are bright but look natural, with nothing over-done in processing. Congratulations on your second place finish.
