There’s a lot going on in this picture: mountain peaks, a lake, trees, boulders and a waterfall. But what might have been a chaotic scene has been handled brilliantly by the photographer. The mountain is positioned perfectly in the frame and, thanks to an aperture of f/22, it’s full of crisp detail. The diagonal line of trees and boulders is well balanced, and the blur of water is nicely judged. It’s a great shot.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Natural spectacles that are always worth a hike up a long path, waterfalls provide a wonderful blast of energy in a landscape scene that might otherwise appear relatively static. Whether you choose to shoot with a slow shutter and blur all of that moving water, or freeze the torrent in mid-air with a fast shutter, there will be movement and power inherent in the image.

Seljalandsfoss is popular with photographers visiting Iceland, so it’s refreshing to see a different viewpoint. Choosing to shoot in the panoramic format has allowed plenty of the foreground rock and foliage to be included, which gives great context, and a shutter speed of 1/100sec has allowed just the right level of blur.
It feels like there are maybe two or three images within this one – all of the elements for a great shot are there and the technical decisions are sound (f/22 to retain detail in the rocks and force a low shutter speed, a low ISO to minimise noise etc). But the composition feels a little off. The grey boulder jutting in at the left catches the eye too much and we can’t quite see enough of the waterfall. The ingredients are all there though.
