I chose this as the winning image because I find it a striking macro of the natural world. The clarity and focus throughout is wonderful. The spiky texture of the flower head is almost tangible and the little ring of purple florets is a great point of focus for the whole image. The upward curving elements frame the central flower head nicely. The crowning element is the perfectly focussed butterfly with its stunning black, orange and blue wings. The blurred green background sets off the subject perfectly. Great job! Congratulations on your winning image. Thank you for submitting it to the contest.

All of the other top ten images that I chose are macro images of wild plants. Your image was, in my view, by far the best of the non macro images in the contest. Its not easy to capture a stunning image of weed without resorting to macro photography. Your image is indeed stunning. The positioning of the reflection is perfect. The focus on the vegetation is perfect and is beautifully set off by the misty background. The colours are stunning, brought out by the contrast betwen the plants and the environment around them. Such an atmospheric image, Great job!! Thank you for submitting your image to the contest.
The dandelion seed head is one of the favourite subjects of the macro photographer, so we see it very often! You have managed to create an image that stands out from the crowd, in my opinion, with this one. It's just so clear, so well focussed, so well positioned. The fact that the seeds are missing in the part facing us really works and allows us to see the detail in the remaining seeds. And to yet again wonder at the detail of the natural world that is so often overlooked. Beautiful job! Thank you for submitting your image to the contest.

I chose this as one of the top three images because I find it a striking macro of the natural world. The clarity and focus throughout is fantastic. The soft texture of the dandelion seed head is so well conveyed. The little ladybug makes the image stand out from so many other images of dandelion seed heads and adds a pop of colour. The blurred green background and the yellow element, presumably a blurred flower head, sets off the subject perfectly. Congratulations on capturing such a beautiful image. Thank you for submitting it to the contest.
Wonderful slightly abstract image, made more impactful by the absence of colour, I think. I find it kind of 'zen' in quality. The pointed leaves suggest birds about to take flight for me. The darker curved parallel stems, together with their reflections really do create an interesting visual effect. Great example of reflection offering a photographic opportunity. Nice job! Thank you for submitting your image to the contest.

This contest is for your photos of plants traditionally dismissed as weeds, photographed growing in the wild. Colour or monochrome images are welcome. More and more cities and individuals are embracing wilder natural spaces where plants are allowed to grow freely and naturally, recognising the importance of diverse wild plants for natural ecosystems, so I look forward to seeing your photos.
