I'd love to be a fly on the wall when a photographer approached two young women and asked "Would you mind stripping to your underwear and wearing animal heads whilst I photograph you stroking a decapitated mannequin head?" This image is so far removed from anything I would generally consider shooting myself that I find it exiting. Personally, I only shoot reality as it unfolds, but this image proves that creating unreality and then capturing it, can also work so very well. It inspires me to think a bit differently.
This was not the sort of image I expected to find myself giving first place to. Generally I'm not a fan of photo composites or a lot of Photoshop work. However this image is weird, funny, surreal, original and very well executed. For me, it's drama and cartoon comedy oddness makes it the clear winner.

This image has so much going for it. The make up job is excellent. I love how the red and blue hands add impact to the image. The facial expression works, the composition is interesting, the depth of field stops us being distracted by the body. The lighting is just right and i love the ring light in the eyes. Pretty much a perfect image. It could easily have won.
Meet the judge
I love this image on so many levels. Firstly, black, blue and purple is my personal favorite colour combination, so I'm a little bit biased. Secondly the images is rather Gothic, so there's a little bias there too. It looks like the shoot could have been of one of Arkham asylums inmates. I love the crazy eyes and the insane grin. Great lighting and composition. This image was definitely a contender for top place.

This images is a fantastic example of 'Pareidolia' the psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exist. In reality this image is some curled up brown leaves reflected in the vertical axis. Although no face exists, we create one. Not only that, but this face expresses emotions. This face exhibits both kindness and sadness in its eyes, even though no eyes exist with which to express them. .....'i am Groot'.
