Red squirrels are one of the most popular wildlife subjects in the UK, thanks to their photogenic nature. This image was taken in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The super-shallow depth of field allows the subject to pop against the earthy background. The pink flowers to the left of the subject add a welcome burst of colour and help to balance this wholesome wildlife image.

Hummingbird’s are known for flapping their wings at lightning-fast speed, so we applaud this image for conveying this sense of motion. The 1/320 sec shutter speed was fast enough to capture the tiny bird’s face crisply, but slow enough to capture plenty of motion. The vibrant colours only add to this stunning image.

This image was taken high up in the Julian Alps. It’s a fantastic reminder that not all great wildlife images depict a tightly cropped subject. The harsh terrain helps to place the goat in a mountainous location and by keeping the animal relatively small within the frame, we’re treated to plenty of gorgeous golden light.

A good photographer is always ready to shoot. This action shot of two boxing hares was taken through a wire fence and from the window of a car. The muted colours complement the hares’ grey coats perfectly and the super-fast 1/2500 sec shutter speed has frozen both the action and any chance of camera shake.

A truly remarkable moment captured. The composition of this image is spot on. The buzzard occupies precisely half of the frame, with the other half reserved for the tiny wasp. Ample negative space surrounds the insect and serves to amplify its tiny sense of scale when compared to the large bird of prey.

This is a fantastic image, but although it contains wildlife in it, we think this is more suited to the street photography competition we’re currently running. The 1/125 sec shutter speed is just fast enough to freeze the action, while still providing motion in the pigeons’ wings. We’re also impressed with the composition and unusually high vantage point. A very nice image indeed.
