This is a pleasing shot on the eye and is sharp in focus. The photographer has done well to capture this fast moving subject of the sea the shot however lacks the level of action required to make my top ten should do well in dolphin specific competitions

This a good shot well executed the composition is sound and if both of the eagles were facing the camera this could well have have made my top ten as I really liked it as it is unusual and demonstrates good photographic skill well done

A nice shot that is sharp with good detail the photographer has I suspect made the best out of a group shot by cropping to remove the other animals in the original frame. This photo if the elk were looking to be in real action would be up there with the very best it is just a little bit tame for an action shot

for action this shot has it all and is a challenging shot to achieve as I am sure your patience would have been challenged for this one the composition and the clipped wings of the goshawk just let this shot down a bit compared to some of the other photographs but well done I liked this.

This is an excellent portrait shot of a sparrow hawk on its kill the composition is excellent and the shot sharp as a tack with great use of light I really like it but sadly borderline on the action stakes however could not pass it by hence my commendation

This is a good action shot of a species that is difficult to get the viewer excited about as sku are brown birds the photographer has therefore done well to attract my attention and I like the fact that this is spontaneous action shot well executed

this shot was a possible top ten contender as it depicts real action with the grebes squabbling on review on the big screen the lack of sharpness just let it down compared to others but a nice action shot all the same well done

This is almost a great shot and I really liked it and recognise how challenging to get a shot like this actually is. The photographer has done well but the dark area in the top right of the shot lets this photograph down in terms of visual impact cropping would be tight but worth a try well done

this is my clear winner for its clarity and fantastic use of light. The shot is also so natural and clearly not staged or taken from a hide, a real spontaneous wildlife action shot. Composition is spot on and the detail first class of two birds in combat that truly captures the moment which for me wildlife photography is all about, congratulations to this worthy winning photographer. For me this is simply stunning and one of the best action shots I have seen of a kestrel and short eared owl in the same frame a real testament to the skill and ability of the person behind the camera.

Coots fighting simply wow. this shot demonstrates that great photography does not always require rare or exotic species to capture the viewers eye here we have two common pond birds in a great action shot that has clarity, excellent composition and that all important sense of movement. the detail in the wonderful feet of the coot is great. I really loved this shot a most worthy top 10 shot

this shot sums up what wildlife photography is all about something different and interesting that makes the viewer look twice. Technically this is not the best shot I have seen but for action that has been spontaneously captured a great shot.

Ospreys fishing are one of my favourite subjects and not easy to photography in hunting mode but to capture both the osprey and the pelican and retain any degree of sharpness is testament to skill and the degree of luck we all need from time to time well done

This is not a shot I would normally select for an action wildlife competition but I kept coming back to it, by using a low shutter speed the photographer has captured the flighting cranes beautifully and when balanced against the use of foreground has achieved an image that appealed to my artistic eye. I selected this shot as one of my top ten because it was different and creative

this shot is a deserving second in my competition. Great action and movement as the two eagles engage in battle. The image is sharp with great composition and knowing how challenging it is to shoot in the cold of winter this shot demonstrates great skill.

The snow and sky contrast is also difficult in winter conditions and the photographer has achieved great results that draws the viewers eye to the subject, a great shot that deserves its place as my third photograph of choice

A classic atmospheric action shot of the wilder beast migration demonstrating the challenges of these amazing animals. I had no hesitation in this shot being selected in my top five as the detail and composition are simply excellent. The use of the light also works really well and given it was shot at a low shutter speed it remains sharp and precise an excellent entry and a photograph I really liked a lot

A difficult shot to capture and fits the competition criteria well however the lack of detail in the bear and the rather dark main subject lets this shot down. Post processing could be greatly improved to bring out the highlights of this super carnivore. well done

a great close up of eagle action very strong contender for the top ten but just narrowly missed out by a whisker loved the aggressive behaviour of these raptors well captured by the photographer an excellent shot that I enjoyed viewing and judging good luck in future competitions

loved this shot, well captured, which depicts hornbill action very well. sharp with good composition I looked at this shot on more than one occasion and if the background had been clear and not so noisy this could have made my top ten a very good shot all the same

super sharp and interesting shot great bird of prey in flight photograph could have made the top ten if action was not the focus of the competition but a lovely example of a red shouldered hawk with its prey well done and an excellent example of flight caught with a high shutter speed

a wonderful shot of this amazing animal great composition and spot on timing to capture this from a boat that must have made this all the more challenging a very close contender for my top ten but as I had another humpback shot that caught my eye on this occasion this shot was pipped at the post just

This shot is an interesting photograph but as a behavioural category rather than action shot. I have therefore made a commendation as the faded reflections work and make this shot pop, a nice shot of two species that are not often photographed together well done

This is one of the sharpest shots in the competition crystal clear and a great photograph. The locking of the feet and the wing positions of both birds is typical of buzzard action. Composition is good and I find little to fault this photograph in other circumstances this could have made the top three well done

an excellent shot very good composition and if this competition had not been focussed on action this excellent shot of the kestrel family would be up there I am sure this shot will win at some point as it is quality with great use of light bringing out so much detail well done

this is a great action shot as the kingfisher rises from the water surrounded by the water droplets. the wings spread make this an appealing and different shot from most kingfisher shots, the closed eyes the vibrancy and movement all make this a great action shot and I commend the photographer for capturing a difficult subject in flight

This mating shot in good light caught my eye the grebes are sharp and in focus with expressions that capture the moment obviously the blurred grass obscures the back end of the male however action wildlife shots are seldom perfect and some would discard this photograph I however think it is worthy of a commendation as it captures action very well

one of my favourite subjects this is an excellent hide shot of an osprey with its catch and I am not at all surprised that the crowd rated this photograph. this shot narrowly failed to get my vote as one of my top five as being picky I think the photographer could bring out a little more detail on one of the wings in post processing to balance the excellent detail on the other. Love the light and composition a great photograph and worthy top ten shot

loved this shot as it is a difficult shot to capture, the colours are great and the subject/action wonderful, well done and thanks for entering this competition I look forward to seeing this shot again maybe in a water birds or kingfisher category where I am sure it will do very well

an excellent shot of this adult and young bald eagle if this shot did not have the distraction of the tree branch could well have made my top ten. A shot that captures the moment with sharp focus and detail is always worthy of being commended well done

For this contest I am looking for action shots of wildlife. Images can include any animal, including birds, but the action must be the main focus of the image. For a successful action shot you will need to make quick composition decisions to capture the moment of action, which may be over very quickly. I look forward to seeing your entries that capture spontaneous shots of wildlife in action.
