Wind Turbines

This photograph has such a wonderful mood and subtlety; we see the horizon line of the mountain ridge and the turbines and then the sprinkling of lights that fill the bottom half of the frame. It made me want to dig deeper into the photograph to work out the scale and the sense of place of this intriguing landscape.

This photograph stood out as one of a few that included an everyday suburban location. I really like that ordinariness as it provided contrast to the white turbine blades sneaking into the background. Though wind turbines are now a common sight, they still hold a certain futuristic quality. The suburban houses, tonally subdued in the foreground, offset this well.

This has such a simple composition: a rugged rocky cliff that tumbles into the sea, complimented by the cold, neutral hues of a wintery outpost, backdropped by an overcast sky. The wind turbine is perfectly placed to, no doubt, capture the icy winds of this desolate place and importantly, perfectly positioned within the frame to create a dramatic composition melding it with the landscape.

I thought this was one of the more successful technically experimental photographs in this contest. The multiple images of the blade positions are well supported by the excellent composition and balance of the key elements: the five turbines, the two-toned landscape, the sky and the clouds.

A wonderful contrast between the black-suited paddle-boarder and the light neutral scene and striking shapes of the turbines in the background. All perfectly composed. Though the figure is in focus, it is the alien in this low-contrast, monochrome seascape.
