Winter

This is a wonderfully abstract image that initially has the viewer questioning what they're looking at – and the sense of scale is intriguing too. Is it a puddle or a pond? The central composition, where the ice gives way to water, lends the image a lovely, calming balance. Well done, a highly deserved winner!

A brilliant slow-shutter shot of the majestic Icelandic Godafoss waterfall exaggerates the raw power of the roaring waters. The close-up viewpoint and wide-angle perspective really help to place the viewer in the scene.

Lone trees were a popular snowscape subject, but this was the N-Photo team's favourite. The composition looks deceptively simple, but great care has clearly been taken with the positioning of tree in the frame, while the sweeping landscape adds to the sense of tranquility, and the sun-kissed peak in the centre is adds another point of interest. All in all a sublime image!

Just looking at this image makes us shiver – and long for the relative warmth suggested by the inviting glow of the tent. It makes us wonder who'd be crazy enough to camp in a snowstorm!

This moody image of sun-kissed mountains offers a masterclass in following the rule of thirds, the peaks topped with a bank of threatening clouds and with a neat, equally spaced band of snow-covered pines below.
