A real mess

November 2025

The cinematic atmosphere of this striking street scene makes for a compelling and engaging image. The rubbish is naturally part of the story, yet the surrounding details add depth and intrigue. Beautifully lit and sensitively handled. A strong, well-crafted photograph.

Wow, those are some battered hands, perfectly illustrating the dedication, hard work and pain behind excelling in certain sports. The black-and-white tones are skilfully handled, and the simple composition is pitch-perfect. A powerful image that quietly tells a story. Good work.

Blimey, that’s one messed-up car. I know the feeling. I am sometimes forced to park under trees, but it’s never been that bad. On the plus side, the splatters, presumably bird poop, create a Jackson Pollock–esque abstraction. Nicely seen and captured. Kudos!

The formal composition works well in this striking image, acting as an artful counterbalance to the chaos. The bright light at the end of the scene creates an intense, optimistic focal point. I love the creativity and boldness to let the highlights blow.

Perfectly seen and captured. The peeled posters look amazing in the strong directional light, and it feels like the work of an abstract painter. The colour palette and tight framing add to the abstract expressionist vibe. Love it. Kudos to you.

Wow. I’ve travelled widely and am always drawn to photographing the chaotic tangle of cables, wires and poles seen in many parts of the world. I’ve seen plenty, but this stands out as truly impressive. Brilliantly observed, composed and captured.

If one good thing can come out of a windscreen disaster, it’s that you managed to capture a cracking (pun intended) shot. The colours, the shattered glass pattern and the reflection of the tree all work beautifully together. Clever and original.

It’s the perfect arrangement and symmetry of the windows that underpins the success of this image. The washing lines, satellite dishes and TV aerials disrupt the order with a poetic rhythm of mess and disorder. As the title suggests, it feels like a musical score. Artfully seen, well done.

The sea of green is immediately appealing, but once you realise it’s a mass of plastic bottles, the message becomes far more poignant. What a fine mess we humans have made of our environment. Love the abstract colour vibes. Kudos!

Love the attention to detail. As a stickler for straight verticals, I appreciate your compositional precision. The formal structure contrasts beautifully with the decay, debris and mess. The layered depth adds richness and complexity. A thoughtfully crafted and visually satisfying image, despite the mess.

The intensity of the black-and-white tones suits the subject perfectly. The chaotic lines and shapes of the wires create a wonderfully disordered yet strangely poetic feel. It’s a striking composition that oozes visual tension and rhythm. This is good expressive work.

This image is bonkers, and even more so after reading the caption. I love the chaotic, surreal groove in this delightful photograph. The sense of movement adds to the carnage, and it’s great to see some analogue work too. Brilliant.

Broken, messed up, ripped and bodged together, yet there’s a surprising harmony in the chaos. The composition feels deliberate, the gaffer tape acts as a quiet but powerful focal point, and the black-and-white tones are handled with confidence. Good work!

We’re celebrating disorder, untidiness, chaos and a notable lack of feng shui in this contest. Go looking for the house with the hoarder, the alley behind the shops, the hair that hasn’t been brushed, and the building development that REALLY shouldn’t have been given planning permission. Interpret the theme as you see fit, and go easy on the not on brief button - one person’s mess is another’s just-sorted-now-time-for-a-cup-of-tea.

An intriguing image. I love the juxtaposition of the piled-up garbage and the “Car Wash Here” sign. The slow reveal of wildlife on closer inspection is clever and well observed. The interplay between the crow, cat and chickens is fascinating. Good work.

The arrangement of the electrical boxes, air-conditioning units, colours and graffiti comes together beautifully. Placed on a gallery wall, this could easily pass as a striking piece of contemporary art. Visually rich, balanced and full of character. Love it, good work.
