I love everything about this image. First of all, I love the fact that, although it depicts a natural element, it isn't obvious at first sight. That's what I'm looking in a winning abstract image. The colours are beautiful and I love the low key look of the image, paired with some highlights that make the colours pop out of the darkness. What a great capture!

What a great image - the perfect abstract nature representation. I love the 'modern art' feel of this image, with the intertwining lines and the strong splashes of colour. I like the fact that there is just enough ice texture visible to be able to identify the subject, but not enough detail for it to be obvious. The description added by the photographer was a much appreciated final touch. A fantastic capture, well done!

A beautiful abstract nature shot that looks like ridges of thick oil painting on canvas. The pattern and colours fascinated me immediately. I appreciated having a description to help me identify the subject - and subsequently the photographer's skill in capturing it from such a different angle. Well done!

Inverting the shot to negative is a very clever move here. The editing choice immediately turns the image in something more graphic, more abstract and eerie at the same time. Very cleverly thought! A piece I would like printed on my living room wall.

Meet the expert judge

The photographer here managed to cleverly turn a picture of a simple subject into an abstract piece that is interesting and appealing. The very high contrast, which certainly isn't a look that works for just any shot, is perfectly used in this image. I love the fact that the leaves have maintained some texture but are dark enough to be pure black in some areas, in perfect contrast with the pure white and defined edges. Great work!

I was instantly drawn to this picture because, although it obviously portraits a natural element, at first sight I couldn't quite tell which one. Was it mountains? Was it a flower? Was it rocks? It got me wondering, zooming in, then nodding in awe. Beautifully captured!

I found it very easy to fall in love with this image the moment I saw it. From its overall neatness, to the sensual lines and the appealing tones - everything works perfectly and creates a beautiful abstract - yet magical - nature shot. Well done!

Abstraction allows the photographer to immerse themselves in composition, colours, and textures, and to do so at the expense of a subject’s wider surroundings. Nature provides an abundance of imagery within easy reach to all that can be captured in this way. Nature in this context refers to the natural world, but excluding man and man’s creations and impacts.

As someone who is passionate about colour, I was instantly drawn to this image. I love the tones and patterns. It works because the image has been shot so closeup that we don't see any other part of the bird aside from the feathers. Well done!

This stunning capture almost resembles blood vessels in the body, and it makes me think of Mother Earth as a creature who lives and breathes. I love the earthy tones and the crisp texture of this shot. An excellent capture!

A simple subject captured very cleverly. At first sight, it made me think of a peacock and of how different natural elements can look similar in shape if we pay enough attention. Lovely back light and a great abstract capture. Well done!

I love the contrast between the sharp iceberg in the center and the blurred lines of melting water all around. It looks almost like an illustration. It made me want to read the image description to find out more about it - what was I looking at? Was it what I thought? This picture posed questions, just like any good abstract piece should do.

The perfect representation of an abstract nature shot - a simple subject observed and photographed from a different perspective - it simply turns the mundane into art. This photographer did it beautifully with this capture. He used his imagination to find the art in the mundane. Well done!

Capturing an abstract shot of flowers is very difficult - they are always so recognisable - but this is a very successful effort. I like the fact that the photographer has chosen to focus on a different detail than the more common petal. The result is a magical image that is half abstract and half makes me feel like I'm walking through the undergrowth of a forest in the company of fairies.

So many beautiful and contrasting textures in this image, and the overall contrast given to the shot works perfectly at cleverly enhancing both the textures and the beautiful cold tones of the shot. The orange filament things and the grass (?) under the surface of the ice add the right colour contrast to the blue and make the shot even more visually appealing. Well done!
