Despite the gloomy weather, a beautiful panoramic shot of the Castlerigg stone circle, set in the stunning scenery of the Lake District, which has been well captured here and presents a stunning backdrop to the stones. The advantage of these weather conditions is that it allows capture of some great colours throughout, with the greens and greys contrasting nicely with the red on the hillsides. The clouds have diffused the light, meaning no harsh shadows and highlights, leading to a wonderful scene throughout. By stitching three shots together we get the bonus of being close-in to the stones whilst seeing the circle in its entirety. Congratulations on your winning image.

A fabulous image, captured in the golden hour towards the end of the day, bringing a lovely warmth and softness to the scene. I love the viewpoint, captured from quite low down with the stones looming above, allowing the sky to be a backdrop to the stones rather than the hillside, which may have caused the structure to be a little less visible. The sky is lovely and through the selection of viewpoint has dominance over the land, which works well as there is much interest in the sky for the eye to explore and enjoy. Congratulations on your second place finish.
On the face of it a simple shot, but one that looks to have been carefully timed and exposed for maximum impact. Although relatively small in the frame overall, by placing the subject directly in front of the small area of brightness remaining from the setting sun, the eye is drawn immediately to the ancient stones. A wonderfully moody image. Congratulations on your third place finish.
A fabulously dramatic image, with the great sky and the stones adding a sense of mystery. The conversion to black and white has been done especially well with predominantly darker tones subtly lifted by some brighter areas in the sky, creating a wonderfully moody scene. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of standing stones, megaliths and stone circles that have been erected by ancient peoples. Please do not enter photos of natural rock formations, modern constructions nor stone structures with walls. Standing stones and megaliths are massive upright stones and often date back hundreds or thousands of years. Examples include Callanish stones in Scotland and the Egyptian obelisks. Stone circles are monuments where several standing stones were arranged together into a circular shape, examples being Stonehenge in England and the Ring of Brodgar in Scotland. Photos can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.

A beautiful scene, capturing the amazing stones of Callanish at their best. Composition is classically simple but works well, especially so with the lovely sky taking up the upper two thirds of the scene. Everything looks natural with no heavy processing producing garish effects that can often ruin a photo captured around sunset. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
