A great shot of one of the many unusual biildings on one of the campuses of the University of Nottingham. I believe this particular building was the first carbon neutral laboratory to be built in the UK, being completely built from natural materials with its energy needs being met by renewable sources. I especially like that we see the building within its wider setting, but are still close enough in to appreciate the design details of the architecture. Composition works well, with the small lake and the reflection contrasting with the harsh lines of the railings and walkway, running on a diagonal drawing the eye into the frame. Great image, well done on your top ten placing..

I love this fairly broad view of the university campus, showing a variety of different buildings in varying shapes and styles of this city centre university. The image is particularly successful through the inclusion of the river in the composition. Although taking up virtually half of the frame, the reflections ensure this is not an uninteresting expance of water. The reflections look nice and natural and not added or over-processed, as can often be the case. I also like the contrasts you are showing between the natural and the built environment, no doubt slso the aim of the architects. Congratulations on your third place finish.

In some respects a simple capture, but one that superbly documents the architecture of thd university building within its immediate surroundings, giving the impression of an open, airy and leafy campus. Composition is great, with enough surrounding the building to prevent the building looking forced in the image with plenty of space to "breathe". Processing looks natural, very much as the eye would see it, but still a fabulous shot. Well done on your top ten placing.

I love the composition of this image and how the different elements come together. The foreground circular artwork is an obvious draw for the eye, but then the receeding walkway with the circles in ever-decreasing sizes pulls thd eye further into the frame, to explore the rest of the architecture in the background. The colour contrasts work well, between the coolness of the retained colour of the night/evening sky and the warmer tones of the artificial lighting. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

There were a number of entries showing this iconic building of Oxford university in the centre of this historic city. What I especially like about this image is the quality of the conversion to black and white, which helps reveal all the details in this wonderful architecture, with bold contrasts which bring the image to life. I am not always a great fan of the effect of long exposure on the sky, and would prefer a rather more natural look, but there may have been other reasons not apparent from viewing the image to have used such a long exposure time for the capture. Still a super image however. Well done on your top ten placing.

See more contest details

This contest is for your photos showing the architecture of educational establishments. Images can show anything from a small rural primary or elementary school to a vast city university. Images can show interiors or exteriors, but must focus on the architecture, rather than students, teachers, classroom equipment or furniture etc. It would add interest to the contest if the name or location of the educational establishment is included in the image description. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.

A late entry into my top ten, this is an image I kept being drawn back to as a result of the rather unusual viewpoint, which adds interest to the shot. The srchitecture beyond maybe does not look to be the most original or inspiring, but captured in this way, looking to be shot through the circular shapes of an art installation, we get a whole new perspective as if looking through a different pair of eyes, with the artwork looking to mimic eyes or a pair of spectacles. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

A great interior image capturing some rather fascinating architecture. The structures look to be a mix of complex shapes and clean simple lines. Composition and framing works well, and we get a good balance of detail and wider context. Exposure has been well controlled in a scene dominated by brightness and white. Great shot, well done on your top ten placing.

Another image in my top ten featuring one of the stunning architectural designs of the Jubilee Campus of the University of Nottingham. I like that we get to see a slightly wider view, rather than just a close in shot of the one cupcake-shaped building, and we get an idea of how the structure sits within the surrounding campus, with its various water features and walkways. Captured under quite challenging lighting conditions with a mix of natural light from the evening sky and the artificial lighting from the interiors. Well done on your top ten placing.
