Autumn

The Dark Hedges is a corridor of gnarled trees in Northern Ireland’s County Antrim. The photography hotspot has garnered additional fame as the Kingsroad in hit television series Game of Thrones. This month’s winning image was shot 30 minutes after sunrise – just as the morning light illuminated the beeches. The portrait orientation conveys the might of the twisted trees, and the autumnal leaves complement the golden light. A thin mist adds to the road’s enchanting aesthetic. All of these elements combine to create a truly stunning image.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this gorgeous photo was a painting. Judging exactly when the leaves are at their peak is one of the many challenges when shooting in fall, but we can’t imagine the golden foliage in this image could look any better. But colours aren’t enough if you don’t have a compelling subject, like this characterful bridge.

The golden light and large discs of bokeh almost steal the show from this charming arctic fox. The dreamy depth of field was achieved by pairing an aperture of f/4 and a long 500mm focal length. We love the warm colour temperature and the contrast produced by the bright rim light.

Intentional camera movement photography (or ICM) might appear rather simple, but it’s a difficult genre to master. A good ICM photo rests on beautiful tones and colours, making autumn an ideal time of year to shoot one. This image was taken in a forest, and the frame was clearly moved in a vertical motion to complement the tall trees.

Macro photography can be seasonal too. The subtle autumnal tones in this handheld close-up were created by photographing this ladybird on a polypore mushroom. The fungi’s tiered structure has made for a layered backdrop that provides plenty of interest, while the insect’s red markings clearly draw the viewer’s gaze.

Although NPOTY is a Nikon-only competition, we still wanted to provide this fantastic image with a review as the beautiful composition and bright autumnal colours really caught our attention. It’s a great example of what can be achieved with the camera very few of us are ever without (the one on our smartphones).
