Black and White Headshots

Beautiful emotion. Beautiful light. Love the detail in the subject's necklace & bag strap - they really lend to a story of an elder going off to his daily business. There's a pain in the subjects eyes which is unmistakable. A calling for the world to be righted & lost wisdom to be restored. I hope it is. Excellent contrast too. V V V nice. Would have this on my wall.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** If you have an aspiring actor as a friend, there’s every chance you’ve been asked to shoot a black and white headshot. A focus on the face, stripped of colour, and presumably seen to be offering a kind of objective rendering of the person’s likeness, against which each can be judged against the other? Black and white headshots can still be bursting with creativity though. The expression, the direction of the head, and the eyes, the backdrop, the hair, there are still a lot of variables to play with, and the act of shooting someone’s headshot can be a great interaction between sitter and snapper.

Wanted to write you a review as believe there are a few entries with this model from you & with a couple of easy but major tweaks you could be producing super excellent headshots!

 1. Focus. The eyes need to be tack sharp in this type of image. Is it camera shake? 1/1250 should be just about ok, but potentially needs to be a bit faster if hand holding at 300mm. Could easily be using an 85mm for this kind of image though. F/2.8 should be ok for this kind of image but trickier than F/4 & might need a bit of practice.
 2. All images could do with a slightly wider frame. A little wider adds some context & story as clothing will contribute. Some images are cropped even tighter at the neck which feels a verrrry tight. Background is nice & expressions on model are generally good, but once you become more proficient with technicals then you can increase the photographer/model connection maybe a little closer than 300mm. Super well done overall & looking forward to seeing your progression.
